Saturday State Sports Briefs: UW looking for more TDs against Penn State

Wisconsin Sports
-- Just getting that one touchdown won’t be enough for the Wisconsin Badgers. The one touchdown needed is for Montee Ball. It would give him 79 for his career and make him the all-time TD scorer in major college football. The Badgers are wanting more than that, though.

STATE COLLEGE, Pa. - Just getting that one touchdown won’t be enough for the Wisconsin Badgers. The one touchdown needed is for Montee Ball. It would give him 79 for his career and make him the all-time TD scorer in major college football. The Badgers are wanting more than that, though.

They’re searching for momentum going into the Big Ten Championship game. Coach Bret Bielema isn’t pulling his punches, saying he will play his starters even though his Badgers have already qualified for the title game. At 7-4 and 4-3 in conference play, the Badgers actually have one of their less impressive records in recent seasons. Ball’s senior season has been something of a disappointment, but he still has 1,400 rushing yards and 17 touchdowns.

Temperatures are expected to be in the 30s with a possibility of some snow flurries, so this could be an old-fashioned, keep-it-on-the-ground game against Penn State in College Station. The Nittany Lion record is also 7-4 in a season which started under a cloud of controversy and scandal. Kickoff is at 2:30 p.m. CST.

The injury to corner back Sam Shields’ ankle is worse than the team thought previously. The Packers now say he is a couple of weeks away from returning to the field. It’s looking like running back Cedric Benson may have to have surgery after sitting out six weeks. And, linebacker Clay Matthews is out for Sunday night’s game at New York against the Giants. Surgery for Benson would end his season. Defensive end B.J. Raji was a full participant in practice yesterday, while linebacker Erik Walden was on the field. Wide receiver Greg Jennings is coming back from an abdominal tear suffered in the first game. He says he has his speed back, but not his stamina. He wouldn’t rule himself out for the Giants game, but coach Mike McCarthy says playing Jennings is a long shot. Jennings is listed as questionable.
