ST. LOUIS - As promised, the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers started reducing the flow from a Missouri River reservoir yesterday. The move could potentially bring barge traffic on the Mississippi River to a standstill within a few weeks.

One result of this year’s drought has been a big drop in water levels on both of those major rivers. The outflow from the Gavins Point Dam was reduced to protect the Upper Missouri River basin. The Corps plans to cut the flow to less than a third of yesterday’s level by December 11th.

It says it’s hoping Mother Nature brings some snow this winter, but that isn’t expected. Governors of Missouri and Illinois and 77 members of Congress have written letters asking the Corps to delay its plan. One governor says he never got a reply.
