Minnesota Sports Roundup: Gophers names Gray as its most valuable player
Minnesota Sports-- One day after ending their regular season with a 26-10 loss to Michigan State, the Golden Gopher football team held their annual awards banquet.
MINNEAPOLIS - One day after ending their regular season with a 26-10 loss to Michigan State, the Golden Gopher football team held their annual awards banquet. Senior MarQueis Gray was given the Bronko Nagurski Award which is given the teams most valuable player.
Gray was also awarded the Paul Giel award for the most unselfish play, Gray started the year at quarterback but moved to wide receiver. Running back Donnell Kirkwood was given the Bruce Smith award as the most outstanding offensive player, while Mike Carter took home the Carl Eller award for most outstanding defensive player. A number of other awards were given out as the team now looks forward to preparing for their post-season bowl game.

After suffering a seizure during halftime of the Gophers loss to Michigan State on Saturday, the team says they expect head Coach Jerry Kill back at work today. Kill was not on the sidelines during the second half as Tracy Claeys the defensive coordinator took over the head coaching duties.

The Minnesota men's basketball team wrapped up the Battle 4 Atlantis with back to back wins including Saturday's 66-63 win over Stanford. One day after scoring a career high 41 points in the Gophers win over Memphis, sophomore Andre Hollins hit three free throws with .4 of a second left to give Minnesota a 66-63 win over Stanford and avenge last year's loss to the Cardinal in the NIT Championship game. Minnesota will take on Florida State in the ACC/Big 10 Challenge Tuesday in Tallahassee. The Gopher women's basketball team improved to 6-1 with a 59-54 win over Missouri in the Cancun Challenge Saturday behind 20 points, 6 assists and 4 rebounds from sophomore Rachel Banham.

Over the weekend the Minnesota Timberwolves losing streak hit five games after losses at Portland Friday and Golden State on Saturday. The Wolves are 0-3 since the return of power forward Kevin Love, though Love is averaging 24 points and 14 rebounds a night. The bigger issue for the Wolves has been opposing teams backcourts having big nights. Friday Blazers rookie Damian Lilliard combined with Wes Matthews to score 58 points and on Saturday it was Steph Curry and Klay Thompson of Golden State combining for 44 points against the Wolves. Minnesota's four-game west coast road trip continues tomorrow in Sacramento against a Kings team they beat 92-80 opening night.
