(Update) Friday Sports Roundup: French will be UW's kicker in tomorrow's night Big Ten title game

INDINAPOLIS - Redshirt sophomore Kyle French will handle the kicking duties for the Wisconsin Badgers in tomorrow night’s Big Ten title game against Nebraska.

French stayed with the No. 1 unit this week, after he missed key field-goal attempts in Wisconsin’s losses to Ohio State and Penn State the last two weeks. French replaced freshman Jack Russell early in the conference regular season, after Russell had missed a 41-yard field goal attempt in the Badgers’ three-point loss to Nebraska in the league opener. Badgers’ assistant Charlie Partridge said French kicked very well at practice this week, and Partridge is confident that French will keep growing and getting better. He has made 10-of-15 field goal tries this season. Wisconsin comes into the title game at 7-5 overall. Nebraska is 10-2.

Steve Stricker of Madison is tied for 11th among 18 players at the World Challenge in Thousand Oaks California. Stricker shot a one-over-par 73 yesterday in the first of four rounds. He’s playing for the first time since the Ryder Cup in late September, when he lost four matches to give Europe a come-from-behind victory over the Americans. Nick Watney leads the World Challenge at five-under-par 67.

Today is the final day for Major League Baseball teams to offer new contracts to players on their 40-man rosters. And there’s some talk that the Milwaukee Brewers will not give a tender offer to left-handed reliever Manny Parra – who’s one of five players eligible for salary arbitration. General manager Doug Melvin has not commented on specific players, but he says it’s possible that the Brewers might not offer a tender to someone. The 30-year-old Parra missed the entire 2011 season with an injured back and elbow. He had surgery to remove a bone spur before returning this season – and he went 2-and-3 this year in 62 appearances with a 5.06 ERA. Milwaukee’s other players who are eligible for salary arbitration are closer John Axford, starters Chris Narveson and Marco Estrada, and outfielder Carlos Gomez.

Former Milwaukee Brewers’ reliever Francisco Rodriguez has been cleared of a domestic abuse-battery charge in Waukesha County. District Attorney Brad Schimel said the victim claimed it was her fault – she and a witness have both returned to their native Venezuela – and the state could no longer meet its burden of proof. So the charge was dropped. K-Rod was charged last month after an incident in Wales in September. Authorities first quoted the woman as saying Rodriguez struck and injured her – but three days later, she recanted her story. At a status conference yesterday, Schimel told a judge that he does not believe Rodriguez and his 23-year-old girlfriend will live in Wisconsin again. Rodriguez became a free agent after the baseball season, and he now lives in Florida.

UW-Oshkosh will play at Linfield of Oregon tomorrow in the quarter-finals of the NCAA Division III football playoffs. Linfield has a 25-game winning streak at home – and their defense leads the nation with 60 sacks and 121 tackles for losses. Linfield’s Wildcats are ranked third in Division III at 11-0, while Oshkosh is at No. 5 at 12-0. The Titans recovered from early deficits in both their previous playoff games this month. Against Bethel last week, Oshkosh went down 14-nothing before scoring the game’s final 37 points. Running back Cole Myhra rushed for 218 yards and three touchdowns in that game, and quarterback Nate Wara – a finalist for the Division-Three’s Gagliardi Trophy – had three touchdown passes. Tomorrow’s winner will face either Saint Thomas of Saint Paul or Hobart of New York in the national semi-finals a week from tomorrow.

The University of Wisconsin men’s hockey team will play at fifth-ranked Denver tonight and tomorrow night. Denver leads the WCHA at 7-1, with an overall mark of 9-3. Wisconsin is 1-5-2 in the conference, and 1-7-2 overall – and the Badgers have dropped five-of-their-last-seven to the Pioneers. Meanwhile, the Badger women play at No. 1 ranked and undefeated Minnesota tomorrow and Sunday afternoons at Ridder Arena. Mark Johnson’s Badgers are unbeaten in their last seven contests, with an overall mark of 7-3-2. Wisconsin is coming off a sweep of Saint Cloud State last weekend. The Golden Gophers are 14-0-0 after sweeping New Hampshire last weekend.
