Saturday State Sports Briefs: Wisconsin-Denver tie at 1-1

Wisconsin Sports
-- A shot in the final 76 seconds found the back of the net and let the University of Denver tie the University of Wisconsin men’s hockey team 1-1.

DENVER - A shot in the final 76 seconds found the back of the net and let the University of Denver tie the University of Wisconsin men’s hockey team 1-1.

The game went overtime, but neither team was able to score. Michael Mersch scored the Badgers’ goal with 12:54 left. Wisconsin enters play in December with only one win on the season so far. The Pioneers were able to score the game-tying goal with an empty net and an extra attacker. The game was the debut for UW's Nic Kerdelis, who had been suspended for the first 10 games by the NCAA due to rules violations. Both teams will play again tonight.

Big Ten Conference officials are worrying about a lot of empty seats for today’s title game between Nebraska and Wisconsin. Thousands of tickets were still available as late as yesterday although fans for both schools may well be taking advantage of picking up cheaper tickets in the secondary market rather than going through both schools to pay more expensive face value tickets. It hasn’t been a good football season for the Big Ten. It only has four teams ranked in the Top-25 and the Badgers are in the championship game in Indianapolis with a mediocre 7-5 record. That obscures the fact the Badgers also have the chance to before the first team in the conference to reach the Rose Bowl three straight years since Michigan in the late 1970s. Nebraska’s record is 10-2. And, both universities are known for bringing large groups of fans on the road. It’s hoped there will be a lot of walk-up sales today because both of those universities returned some of their allotment of tickets and sales were behind last year’s levels.

The University of Wisconsin wrestling team is in 10th place out of 32 teams after the first day's competition at the Cliff Keene Invitational Tournament in Las Vegas. The Badgers have two wrestlers competing in the championship bracket in 133-pounder Tyler Graff and heavyweight Connor Medberry. Three other UW wrestlers are still wrestling in the consolation bracket. Ohio State leads in the team score and Missouri is second. The tournament concludes today.

The Milwaukee Brewers are cutting ties with left-hander Manny Parra. General manager Doug Melvin said yesterday he would not give Parra a tender offer for a 2013 contract. Last night was the deadline for Major League teams to offer new contracts to everyone on their 40-man rosters. Parra is one of five Brewers eligible for salary arbitration early next year, but he’s the only one not to get a tender offer. Melvin said that by releasing Parra now, he’d have a better chance to sign with another team. And even though he’s been a reliever lately, Melvin says he believes Parra has the talent to return to a starting role with somebody else. The 30-year-old Parra was the Brewers’ 26th-round draft choice in 2001. He was the team’s minor league pitcher of the year in 2007. He was in the Milwaukee rotation in 2008-and-’09, but he missed all of 2011 with back and elbow trouble. As a reliever this year, Parra went 2-and-3 with a 5.06 ERA.

The Milwaukee Wave is off to a 1-2 start in its Major Indoor Soccer League season. And the defending champions hope to return to .500 tomorrow night when they host Chicago. Milwaukee is coming off a 15-4 drubbing by Baltimore, and an overtime home loss to Missouri. The Wave’s only victory so far was on Opening Night at Wichita. The Chicago Soul is a new entry in the league this year – and they’re off to a 2-4 start.
