Sunday State Sports Briefs: Packers look for fifth straight win over Vikes'

GREEN BAY - The Green Bay Packers try to beat Minnesota for a fifth straight time today in an NFC North showdown. Kickoff is at 12 noon.

The Packers are trying to bounce back from their most lopsided defeat in nearly five years, a four touchdown loss to the New York Giants last Sunday night. The Packers are one game off the pace set by the Chicago Bears right now. And, the Vikings could get right back into the race with a win. At practices this week, the task has been clear – the rush defense has to get better and the Packers have to protect quarterback Aaron Rodgers. He was sacked five times by the Giants. The 38-10 loss ended the Packers winning streak. They will try to start another one on the home turf at Lambeau Field today.

He was listed as doubtful Friday, but now wide receiver Percy Harvin has been ruled out for today’s game by the Minnesota Vikings. Harvin had been listed as doubtful for the Packer game. Now, he hasn’t traveled with the team to Lambeau Field. This will be the third straight missed game for Harvin, the Vikings best receiver. He had missed only three games in his first three seasons. Until he was hurt, Harvin had led the NFL in total yards from scrimmage. The Vikings split the two games they’ve played without him on the field. Meanwhile, the Packers have placed tight end Andrew Quarless and safety Sean Richardson on injured reserve. Quareless has been suffering with a knee injury since he was hurt last year. Richardson has a back injury. The Packers signed running back DuJuan Harris and wide receiver Jeremy Ross to fill the vacant roster spots. Both had been on the practice squad.

Majerus coached 25 years at four universities with only one season with a losing record. He also was an assistant with the Milwaukee Bucks. He had announced November 19th that the heart condition would keep him from coaching the St. Louis University Billikens this season. He had gone on leave last summer. Majerus was undergoing evaluation and treatment at a Los Angeles hospital when he died. He had a 517-216 won-loss record as a college coach.

The University of Wisconsin men’s hockey team scored twice in the first 13 minutes and whipped No. 5 ranked Denver 3-1 Saturday in a Western Collegiate Hockey Association game. It was the Badgers’ second victory of the season. Goals by Derek Lee and Nic Kerdiles in the first period were all they would need. John Ramage scored on a short-handed empty-net goal with nine seconds remaining. Wisconsin’s record improves to 2-7-3, including 2-5-3 in conference play. Denver outshot the Badgers 36-25, but goalie Landon Peterson was up to the challenge, making 35 saves.

Mondesi is the 20 year old son of a former National League All-Star outfielder. He hit .231 with five home runs in 68 games in the rookie league last summer.
