Minnesota Sports Briefs: Gopher hoops team moves up in rankings

-- The University of Minnesota men's basketball team is catching the eye of voters in the two national polls.

MINNEAPOLIS - The University of Minnesota men's basketball team is catching the eye of voters in the two national polls.

Minnesota moved up seven spots to No. 14 in this week's media poll, while the weekly coaches poll shows the Gophers at 21st. This is the first week Minnesota has been ranked in the coaches survey. Last week, the Gophers were 21st in the media rankings. The 8-1 Golden Gophers host South Dakota State tonight at Williams Arena at 7 p.m.

The University of Minnesota volleyball team made it through the NCAA Division I tournament to the Sweet 16. The Golden Gophers, hosting the first and second rounds last weekend at the Sports Pavillion, defeated Liberty 3-0 and Creighton 3-1. The U will head to West Lafayette, Ind. for this weekend's regional hosted by Purdue. The Gophers will face the Boilermakers Friday at 7 p.m. Penn State and Kentucky will be the other match in the regional. The winners will meet Saturday at 4 p.m.

The MIAC and NSIC has named their weekly awards winners in men's and women's basketball. Augsburg junior center Dan Kornbaum of Little Falls is this week's MIAC men's basketball Player of the Week. Carleton junior forward Akemi Arzouman of Irvine, California is this week's MIAC women's honoree. The NSIC weekly winners were Minot State junior forward Carly Boag in women's basketball and Northern State senior forward Dustin Tetzlaff in men's hoops.

The Minnesota Timberwolves begin a brief two-game road trip tonight in Philadelphia against the 76er's. Minnesota has won two-of-three following Friday's 95-85 home victory over Milwaukee. The T'wolves sit at 7-8 on the season. Tonight's tipoff is set for 6 p.m. Minnesota visits Boston tomorrow.
