Panel to study all jail alternatives

Pierce County’s options on what to do about the jail took another turn Monday.

Pierce County’s options on what to do about the jail took another turn Monday.

The finance and personnel committee approved the creation of an ad hoc committee to study all jail alternatives and to make a recommendation in no less than 12 months to the finance and personnel committee.

Committee Chairman Jeff Holst explained the need for the ad hoc committee.

“We’ve been spinning our tires on this for 20 years,” he said. “It’s either time to move it forward or kill it all together.”

Holst went on to say the committee will be made up of three people “who aren’t at the whim of the electorate.”

The committee also appointed Administrative Coordinator JoAnn Miller to find a facilitator for the ad hoc panel because, as Holst explained, “there is tons of information out there and we don’t want to dump it on three people.”

Further information about this ad hoc committee was unknown before this edition of the Herald went to press.
