SPRING VALLEY - It wasn't pretty but considering how road wins have been a difficulty for the Prescott High School boys basketball team, Monday's 62-40 win over Spring Valley was well received.

Prescott got off to a very good start, at one point leading 24-5 early in the second quarter thanks to the scoring of sophomore Clay Seifert. He had 10 first half points and 19 at halftime for a 23-point effort to lead his team.

But SV's Zac Webster proved his mettle as one of the top guards in the area by bringing Valley back in the ballgame. They rallied to cut Prescott's lead to 24-13 after an 8-0 run and then cut the lead down to nine at 35-36 early in the third quarter. He finished with 25 points.

Spring Valley seemed in position to cut further into PHS's lead with starting center Nick Jacobsen in foul trouble and on the bench. But Prescott's frontcourt showed its awesome potential when big 6-6 sophomore Joe Haas and 6-4 fellow sophomore Charlie Tayson came into the ballgame. Both players scored eight points as their size and length and strength made it impossible for the smaller SV team to match-up.

"We know Nick is going to draw a lot of double teams and he's going to draw his share of fouls," Prescott head coach Nick Johnson said. "When that happens Joe and Charlie showed tonight we can still be very effective in the post at both ends."

Valley's scrappy play and hustle certainly gave Prescott fits but in the end they simply didn't have enough energy to keep up. Another bad start (Spring Valley fell behind Colfax in its first game 27-7 in the first game) meant more energy spent trying to catch up.

"We've got to be more mentally ready to play and prepare," Spring Valley head coach Rob Bosshart said. "The effort was there but when have to catch up so much and have to scramble a lot to get into position on defense, you're really wasting energy you need for the whole ballgame. And you could see by the end of the game we were spent and they able to push the lead out again."

Spring Valley was also limited on offense without a post game which Prescott swallowed up. Only four players scored for the Cardinals. Nate Kalmes was also in double figures with 13 points. Jordan Koski had nine points for Prescott.

Prescott,1-1 overall, will play its first home game Friday vs. Osceola. Spring Valley, 0-2 overall, is back in action Thursday at Mondovi.
