Walker urges flexibility in 'fiscal cliff' talks

WASHINGTON D.C. - Governor Scott Walker urged President Obama today to consider the economic effects of the fiscal cliff – the massive tax increases and spending cuts due to take effect in January if Congress doesn’t stop it.

The Republican Walker joined five other governors from both parties at a budget meeting at the White House, attended by Obama and Vice President Joe Biden. Walker returned to Wisconsin before the other governors were due to meet later today with Senate Democratic Majority Leader Harry Reid and House GOP Speaker John Boehner. Walker told reporters that his group did not urge a specific budget plan for the president to consider. He said the governors hoped that Congress would make something happen, and that it’s positive for the states’ economies.

Walker was part of a group sent by the National Governors Association, which normally avoids partisan battles since its members are from both major parties. Earlier today, the conservative Heritage Foundation said the average family in Wisconsin making $5,600 a year would pay an extra $3,200 in federal taxes if the fiscal cliff situation is not resolved.
