TO THE EDITOR: Dear Pierce County Residents: Over the years, the Pierce County Historical Association (PCHA) has reached out to the population of the county requesting assistance in preserving local history.
Renovation of the Lawrence Photo Studio and property in Ellsworth (house portion) is done to the extent the PCHA is moving into the building. Funds to do that big job came from a variety of sources, including cash donations by many citizens.
However, there remains a big job to be done: the reworking of the interior of the business area of the building. Walls, floors, ceilings, insulation, wiring, HVAC, plumbing, window replacement, sheet rocking, painting, varnishing and a new two-bathroom addition must be done.
All of these things cost buckets of money. Yes, grants from outside sources can be and are being applied for, to raise money. But they are limited as to the amount given and what is needed in many ways.
Residents of the county ought to be participating. The museum that will be placed there is for all of us. This museum will be unique, dedicated to photography. This museum will draw visitors; tourism is a big factor in local economics.
The Lawrence Photo Studio’s customers came from not only the county, but from about 14 states across the U.S. The same could be true of the museum.
Cash donations are tax-deductible. Please think about giving to the fundraising needed to complete the renovations of the Lawrence property. And do it so they can be deducted from your 2012 tax returns. Or at any time you should wish to do so.
If every county resident would donate $2, that would bring in a lot of money.
