MADISON - Could Barry Alvarez coach the Wisconsin Badgers in the Rose Bowl? Nobody’s confirming it, but a couple of media reports say he’ll oversee the football team – and he might be the head man on the sidelines when the Badgers face Stanford on New Year’s Day.
Alvarez said he was surprised as anyone when coach Bret Bielema took the head coaching job at Arkansas. Alvarez said his main objectives right now are to find a new coach, and to give the Badger players – especially the seniors – a “tremendous experience” at the Rose Bowl. Alvarez coached Wisconsin for 16 years, and is now the school’s athletic director. He’s 3-0 at Pasadena, having beat UCLA in 1994-and-’99, and Stanford in 2000. This year’s Stanford team is ranked eighth with a record of 11-and-2. The Badgers are 8-5 after their Big Ten championship victory over Nebraska.
Media reports say Alvarez has a short list of possible replacements for Bielema. Pittsburgh coach and former Badgers’ offensive coordinator Paul Chryst tops the list – but Chryst says he’s more interested in getting the Panthers ready for their bowl game. New reports say Bielema is getting a six-year contract at Fayetteville worth three-point-two million dollars a year.
