ST. LOUIS - Despite warnings from the shipping industry, the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers is refusing requests from state and federal lawmakers to release more water from a dam on the Missouri River.

Barge operators are warning the situation is getting worse for those who ship their product on the Mississippi River, which is downstream. One Corps official pointed to a revised National Weather Service forecast showing the level on the Mississippi hasn’t fallen as rapidly as was feared.

The Corps started slowing the outflow from a Missouri River dam in South Dakota last month, reducing the water released by two-thirds.
