Blown leads lead to Badger hockey win and tie

MADISON - The University of Wisconsin hockey teams benefited and were hurt by blown two-goal leads Saturday.

No. 8 ranked North Dakota jumped out to a 2-0 lead, but couldn’t hold it at LaBahn Arena as the No. 9 ranked Wisconsin women’s hockey team rallied for a 3-2 win. It was the first time all season the Badgers had won after being outshot by an opponent. North Dakota scored just 40 seconds into the game and went up 2-0 by the second period. Goals by Madison Packer and Brianna Decker came just 30 seconds apart near the end of that period. Then, Alev Kelter scored the winner a couple of minutes into the final period. Alex Rigsby had 33 saves in the victory as Wisconsin’s record improved to 11-6-2. The Badgers go for the home sweep this afternoon at 1 p.m. in Madison.

The Wisconsin men’s hockey team, however, blew a 3-1 lead, but held on for a 3-3 tie at home against Michigan Tech Saturday. Both games in the weekend series ended in a tie. Tyler Barnes opened the scoring with a first period goal, but Tech answered quickly. Brendan Woods made the lead 2-1 at 8:56 of the period. Joseph LaBate made the lead 3-1 early in the second period. The game-tying goal came early in the final period. Wisconsin controlled the action and outshot Michigan Tech 37-25. Joel Rumpel made 22 saves. Wisconsin’s record is 2-7-5, including 2-5-5 in WCHA competition.
