Sunday State Sports Briefs: Packers hope to keep home winning streak against Lions in tact
Wisconsin Sports-- The last time the Detroit Lions won a game at Lambeau Field, Barry Sanders was keeping defensive players awake at night. The Lions will try to avoid losing on the Packers’ home turf for a 21st consecutive time tonight.
GREEN BAY - The last time the Detroit Lions won a game at Lambeau Field, Barry Sanders was keeping defensive players awake at night. The Lions will try to avoid losing on the Packers’ home turf for a 21st consecutive time tonight.
Green Bay is trying to retain its hold on first place in the NFC Central Division by taking its ninth win in 13 games. The Pack moved back into a tie for the top spot with last week’s 23-14 win over the Vikings. The Packers are welcoming a familiar face with the signing of Ryan Grant. Injuries have depleted the team’s running backs and the Pack only have three rushing touchdowns in the first dozen games. Grant had thousand-yard seasons in 2008 and 2009. The Lions will be trying to reverse the negative momentum. They’ve dropped four in a row and have a disappointing 4-8 record.

The playoff run for WIAC football champion UW-Oshkosh came to an end Saturday as St. Thomas won 28-14 at O'Shaughnessey Stadium in St. Paul in an NCAA Division III playoff semifinal game. UWO was behind from the start of the game as the Tommies scored on a fumble recovery :14 seconds into the game. The Tommies led 21-0 at the end of the first quarter and 28-7 in the third. UST quarterback Matt O'Connell threw for one touchdown and ran in two more. The unbeaten Tommies, who lost in the semis last year, now will play in the Amos Alonzo Stagg Bowl, the Division III championship game next weekend in Salem, Virginia against 10-time champion Mt. Union College of Ohio.
