Raiders ready to run to the top

ELMWOOD – After a hard loss at Elk Mound last month, the Elmwood High School boys’ basketball team wanted one thing when playing its next game.

The Raiders imposed their will in running fashion against Plum City in a big 77-31 win. And while Plum City is not at the level of the top teams in the league, the basket-to-basket game is the way the Raiders want to use the talents of their athletic and physically imposing team this season.
Especially when much could be at stake, including a Dunn-St. Croix Conference title and a regional title, which EHS just fell short of both in 19-6 overall, 13-3 D-SC season .
Elmwood graduated All D-SC point guard Tanner Hoyt along with Jaylen Case and Charles Hutter from that team. Returning are All D-SC seniors Logan Wolf and Kyle Webb along with fellow seniors Eli Fredrickson, David Rhy, Seth Jones and sophomore Levi Wolf.
The Raiders will also be helped out by another senior, Tom LaFlex, who has overcome injury problems which kept him away from the court last season.
“When you have a lot of seniors you have a group of kids who take a sense of ownership to the team,” Elmwood head coach Chris Segerstrom said. “They’ve worked hard to get to this point and want to show people they are for real. They certainly have the talent and success so far which shows this and they want it to continue and go further.”
The Raiders also want to show up-tempo, racehorse basketball can be played with great discipline as well. Taking over for Hoyt at point guard will be Fredrickson and will be distributing the ball to wing players like Logan Wolf and Jones. Rhy will also be in the backcourt and the imposing Webb will play at the post.
Segerstrom is looking to his reserves to be solid role players and depth for the 2012-13 Raider squad. This will include LaFlex and Levi Wolf along with senior Josh Wells, Pat Weix, juniors Tyler Freyholtz, Jake Pickerign and sophomores Noah Wells and Nick Bechel.
“If we have starters who can go from the outset and those coming off the bench either to take their place for a breather or come in for certain game situations then our balance is going to be very effective,” Segerstrom said.
Elmwood’s top competition for the D-SC should be the Mounders along with defending league champion Colfax.
