A recommendation from the district’s ad hoc facilities committee was approved by the Ellsworth School Board Monday.

The board authorized the superintendent to proceed with involving professionals for further study of the avenues and costs of addressing the many facilities needs of the district.

Superintendent Barry Cain said this could lead to a referendum, but there are also alternatives, including: changing the way things are done, using the fund balance in the district’s budget to cover costs, using performance-based incentives and/or a cost avoidance option in which action is taken now to avoid further expense later.

Cain reviewed the committee’s presentation originally made to the board last month. Members concluded the district lacks facilities providing for children’s expanding educational needs for today and the future.

Main points in the presentation were the existence of insufficient educationally appropriate space; inadequate building access, safety and security; and aging facilities, mechanical infrastructure, and transportation.
