Minnesota Sports Briefs: Tommies geraing up for title game

-- The St. Thomas football team is preparing for this Friday's NCAA Division III national title game.

ST. PAUL -- The St. Thomas football team is preparing for this Friday's NCAA Division III national title game.

The Tommies advanced the national championship game with a 28-14 win over UW-Oshkosh this past Saturday. Third-ranked St. Thomas will play No. 1 Mount Union in Friday's game in Salem, Virginia, at 6 p.m., Minnesota time. Both teams enter the game with 14-0 records. The game will be televised nationally on cable network ESPNU.

Jerry Kill's University of Minnesota football team will be back on the practice field tomorrow, as they continue to prepare for the December 28th Meineke Car Care Bowl of Texas. Minnesota squares off with Texas Tech in Houston for the postseason game. The Gophers are allowed 15 total practices leading up to the contest, and have worked out three times so far. The team will practice on campus Wednesday, Friday, Saturday, and Sunday this week. Tickets for the bowl game are on sale at the Gophers' webpage.

The University of Colorado named Mike MacIntyre its new head football coach on Monday. He received a five-year deal worth two-million-dollars annually. MacIntyre has spent the last three seasons at San Jose State. The Golden Gophers host San Jose State next season on September 21st, 2013 at TCF Bank Stadium.

Fresh off of moving up in both major national college basketball polls, the University of Minnesota men's basketball team will host North Dakota State at Williams Arena tonight. The 10-1 Golden Gophers moved up to No. 13 in the national media poll and to No. 16 in the national coaches rankings. The Bison enter this evening's game with an 8-2 mark. Tipoff is set for 8 p.m. at the Barn. Tickets are still available for the game.

Golden Gopher star women's basketball player Rachel Banham of Lakeville is this week's Big Ten Conference Player of the Week. She helped Minnesota to three wins during the week, averaging nearly 21-points per game in the process. She scored 29 points in a win over UMKC. This is the second weekly honor in her career and the first this season. Banham is a sophomore for Pam Borton's team, which will be off until a December 20th game at home against Northern Iowa.

Ticket packages for this year's WCHA Final Five at the Xcel Energy Center are now on sale. Fans can purchase the ticket plans at the Xcel Energy Center box office and through Ticketmaster. The event will be held from March 21-23, 2013 and will likely be a popular ticket. This will be the final WCHA Final Five for many traditional WCHA schools, including Minnesota, Wisconsin, North Dakota, Minnesota-Duluth, and others. The Big Ten and National Collegiate Hockey Conference are both forming, swiping several of the current WCHA members beginning next year. Ticket packages start at $80 each.

The Minnesota Timberwolves are back in action tomorrow night as they host the Denver Nuggets at Target Center. Minnesota has won three of its last four games following Friday's 91-73 rout of Cleveland. The T'wolves are 9-9 on the season. Head coach Rick Adelman said after yesterday's practice that it is unlikely that guard Ricky Rubio will play in tomorrow's game. He says Rubio continues to progress and it won't be long before he's playing in games. Rubio and the Wolves will practice this morning at the Target Center.

There's a field of dreams underneath that snow somewhere. Baseball fans get their first taste of spring as tickets went on sale this morning for TwinsFest, which runs January 25th through the 27th at the Metrodome. The annual event features dozens of current and former Twins players signing autographs and posing for pictures, plus other activities. Tickets will be on sale at Target Field, Twins Pro Shops and online at Twins-Baseball-dot-Com.
