Morning Sports Roundup: Could another Badger assistant be leaving?
Wisconsin Sports-- Wisconsin offensive coordinator Matt Canada has reportedly been offered the same post at North Carolina State.
MADISON - University of Wisconsin offensive coordinator Matt Canada has reportedly been offered the same post at North Carolina State.
Ex-Badgers’ assistant Dave Doeren recently became the new coach at N.C. State – and Canada ran Northern Illinois’ offense for Doeren in 2011. But media reports said Canada wants to stay in Madison, and he’s happy at the UW after joining the Badgers’ staff a year ago. Wisconsin has lost one assistant since former coach Bret Bielema left for Arkansas 10 days ago. Badgers’ defensive coordinator Chris Ash plans to run Bielema’s defense in Fayetteville, after he coaches the Wisconsin defense in the Rose Bowl. Wisconsin athletic director Barry Alvarez says the remaining assistants have been considering job offers – but they’ll all be around to coach the Rose Bowl Game against Stanford on New Year’s Day in Pasadena.

Milwaukee Bucks’ forward Tobias Harris will be out for 7-to-10 days, after he suffered cuts to his right elbow in Wednesday night’s home win over Sacramento. It’s just the latest in a slew of injuries to the Bucks – and they’ll be short-handed again tonight when they play at Cleveland. Coach Scott Skiles says he might not know until after this morning’s shoot-around how many players he’ll have available. Beno Udrih and Mike Dunleavy did not make the trip. Udrih has missed six games with a sprained ankle – and Dunleavy has been out for five contests with a deep knee bone bruise. Forward Larry Sanders and guard Doron Lamb are both listed as probable for tonight’s game with illnesses. Lamb was expected to join the team today in Cleveland.

Bucks’ guard Monta Ellis is in sixth place among Eastern Conference guards in the early fan voting for the NBA All-Star Game. Milwaukee point guard Brandon Jennings is ninth in the same category. Former Marquette guard Dwayne Wade of Miami leads the voting among East guards, with 431-thousand – and Boston’s Rajon Rondo is second. Ellis has 47-thousand votes so far, and Jennings 35-thousand. Miami’s LeBron James is the overall leading vote-getter so far with 641-thousand. The All-Star Game will be played on February 17th in Houston.

The University of Wisconsin men’s hockey team shut out Alabama-Huntsville 5-0 last night in Madison. The Badgers wasted no time getting on the board, as Nick Kerdiles scored four minutes into the game off an assist from Kevin Schulze. Michael Mersch made it 2-nothing Wisconsin just two minutes later. And both Kerdiles and Mersch each had two goals on the night. The Badgers earned their first home win of the season, as they improved to 3-7-5 – and they’re now 1-4-2 at home. Alabama-Huntsville fell to 3-13-1. The two teams will close out their weekend series tonight at the Kohl Center.
