Sunday State Sports Briefs: Control of NFC North at stake in today Packers-Bears showdown

Wisconsin Sports
-- A win today means a second straight NFC North Division title for the Green Bay Packers.

CHICAGO - A win today means a second straight NFC North Division title for the Green Bay Packers.

The game at Soldier Field features a charging Packer team taking on a Chicago Bears team which controlled the division until the last five games. The Packers have won seven of their last eight, while Chicago tries to change the momentum of four losses in five games. It’s still not easy. Coach Mike McCarthy acknowledges his team faces a tough opponent, a tough place to play and there is a lot on the line. One more streak – the Pack has beaten the Bears in the last five meetings between the teams. This year Green Bay is earning the image of a come-from-behind team, trailing at some point in five of its last seven victories. Kickoff is at noon Central time in Chicago.

A 20-point win over Savannah State marks a significant milestone for the Marquette University men's basketball program. Hours after Marquette and six other schools officially announced they were leaving the Big East, the Golden Eagles bounced Savannah State 71-51 yesterday at the Bradley Center n Milwaukee. It was the 1,500th victory in Marquette history. Vander Blue and Davante Gardner led the way with 14 points each. A 14-2 second-half run put the game away for the Golden Eagles. Their new conference doesn’t have a name yet, but the seven schools in the Big East which don’t play FBS-level football will be moving on. Marquette, Georgetown, St. John’s Villanova, DePaul, Seton Hall and Providence made it official yesterday their departure from that league.
