Sunday State Sports Briefs: Marquette back to winning as they upend LSU

Wisconsin Sports
-- Marquette hit 24-of-25 free throws and needed just about every one in a narrow 84-80 home victory over LSU.

MILWAUKEE - Marquette hit 24-of-25 free throws and needed just about every one in a narrow 84-80 home victory over LSU.

Davante Garden put the nail in the Tigers’ coffin by hitting six straight free throws in the final 36 seconds. He came off the Golden Eagle bench to score 19, while Junior Cadougan and Vander Blue each had 17. The win was the 15th straight at home for coach Buzz Williams’ team and it was a step in the right direction toward forgetting last week’s 49-47 upset loss to UW-Green Bay. Andre Stinger nailed six three-pointers and led the Tigers with 20 points. Louisiana State cut the difference to a bucket at 78-76 with about 40 seconds left, but they couldn’t make it all the way back. Marquette’s win in the non-conference game gives the Eagles an 8-3 record.

Alec Brown scored the first seven points for UW-Green Bay and ended up with 19 points in a 72-55 win over South Dakota. The Phoenix were hot from the field, hitting almost 57 percent. With the Coyotes leading 17-11 half-way through the first half, the Phoenix went on a 24-8 run and put the game out of reach. Keifer Sykes added 17 points and eight assists for the winners, who improved their record to 5-7. Trevor Gruis led South Dakota scoring with 18 points.

The Green Bay Packers need to beat Tennessee today, then win again to have a chance for a first-round bye in the NFL playoffs. The Packers clinched the NFC North title by beating the Bears last week. Last year Green Bay got the first-round bye, then was promptly knocked in an upset loss to the New York Giants. That doesn’t mean the Pack isn’t wanting a bye again this year. The starters got a lot of time off at the end of the 2011 season and that isn’t going to happen this time. The Packers bring a 10-4 record into today’s game against a Titan crew which is playing much better recently.

It’s called addressing your biggest weakness. The addition of left-handed relief pitcher Tom Gorzelanny is aimed at bolstering the Milwaukee Brewers’ bullpen, the worst in the major leagues last year. Gorzelanny’s career statistics aren’t eye-popping, but he was nearly invincible in the second half of last season, compiling an earned run average of 1.33 for the Washington Nationals. The Brewers got him for $5.7 million, a $300,000 signing bonus plus salaries of $2.6 million next season and $2.8 million in 2014. The lefty also pitched for the Pirates and Cubs. He hopes to beef up a Milwaukee bullpen which set a franchise record with 29 blown saves in 2012.
