County prep teams take part in holiday tournaments

Holiday Week between Christmas and New Year’s may be a break for some but several Pierce County high school athletic teams will be involved in tournament competition.

Holiday Week between Christmas and New Year’s may be a break for some but several Pierce County high school athletic teams will be involved in tournament competition.

The county’s wrestling teams will be busy as both the Northern Badger Tournament and Bi-Classic will take place Friday and Saturday.

The Northern Badger is hosted by River Falls High School while the Bi-State is run by Holmen and will be at the La Crosse Center. No. 7 ranked Spring Valley/Elmwood and Prescott will take part in the Northern Badger which begins at 8 a.m. Friday while No. 3 ranked Ellsworth will be at the Bi-State which starts at 9:30 a.m. Friday.

Elmwood and Prescott’s girls and boys basketball teams will travel together to participate in holiday tournaments.

Elmwood will be at the Glenwood City Holiday Tournament. The boys’ team plays St. Croix Falls in the high school gym Thursday starting at 2 p.m. and the EHS girls’ team will play right after them at 4 p.m. against Baldwin-Woodville. On Friday the Raider boys play Chippewa Falls McDonell in the GC Elementary School gym at 6 p.m. with Raider girls and McDonell playing at 8 p.m. in the same gym.

Prescott’s two hoops teams makes their annual trek to South St. Paul for Packers’ Holiday Classic Thursday and Friday. Action both days begins at 1 p.m. The field for the boys’ tournament includes the Cardinals, host South St. Paul, North Branch, Minn. and Park of Cottage Grove. In the girls’ tourney there’s PHS and SSP along with Chisago Lakes, Minn. and Concordia Academy of Roseville, Minn. Girls games are at 1 p.m. and 5 p.m. and boys’ games are at 3 p.m. and 7 p.m.

Two more boys’ basketball teams will be in tournaments. Ellsworth again heads down to Lake City, Minn. for its annual tournament Thursday and Friday. Also in the field will be the host Tigers, Legacy Christian Academy and a team from Hawaii, Mid-Pacific Institute, will also be in the grouping. Ellsworth plays at 12:30 p.m. Thursday against Legacy Christian.

Spring Valley will play in the Clayton Invitational Thursday and Friday. The Cardinals will take on Prairie Farm Thursday at 5 p.m. and will play the host Bears Friday at 7 p.m.
