Both the Northern Badger and Bi-State Classic high school wrestling tournaments start today and go through Saturday.

Both the Northern Badger and Bi-State Classic high school wrestling tournaments start today and go through Saturday.

Normally Ellsworth’s wrestling team wouldn’t face Luxemburg-Casco’s wrestlers until state tournament competition but this season the Panthers will get two cracks at the No. 1 ranked Spartans during the regular season.

The first will be at the Bi-State this weekend as L-C makes its debut in the Bi-State Classic, moving from the On the Water Tournament in Oshkosh they usually compete in to La Crosse. The two teams will meet again a week later as Ellsworth makes its debut in the Cheesehead Invitational in Kaukauna, one of the nation’s top prep wrestling tournaments.

L-C’s presence along with the addition of the state’s top ranked team in Division 1 in Wausau West and Division 3 in Lancaster makes this the strongest Bi-State Classic field since in a decade. Back then Owatonna, Minn. and Wisconsin Rapids Lincoln duked it out with Ellsworth in cozy confines of the La Crosse Center but the emergence of The Clash national dual meet tournament in Rochester, Minn. took those programs away from the Bi-State and left the Bi-State diminished of top ranked teams. That won’t be the case this year. And these teams will be joined by several other ranked or close-to-being-ranked squads such as No. 3 Ellsworth, Hudson, No. 6 Holmen, Middleton, No. 9 Mauston, Nekoosa/Port Edwards, West Salem-Bangor, Weston/Ithaca and Stratford.

Top ranked or special mention teams who will be at the Northern Badger starts with No. 7 Spring Valley/Elmwood along with No. 6 Glenwood City, No. 9 Clear Lake, No. 10 Neillsville/Loyal/Greenwood and No. 10 Boyceville. The Northern Badger truly is a regional tournament this year as all the teams come from north and northwestern parts of the state with Melrose-Mindoro/Gale-Ettrick-Trempealeau the squad the furthest to the south of River Falls.
