Saturday State Sports Briefs: Brewers add another lefty to bullpen
Wisconsin Sports-- There were times last season when Brewers manager Ron Roenicke could have used a lefty in his bullpen. Now, it looks like he will have two. Though it’s not official yet, Milwaukee has reportedly come to terms with Mike Gonzalez on a deal worth two and a quarter million dollars.
MILWAUKEE - There were times last season when Brewers manager Ron Roenicke could have used a lefty in his bullpen. Now, it looks like he will have two. Though it’s not official yet, Milwaukee has reportedly come to terms with Mike Gonzalez on a deal worth two and a quarter million dollars.
Another lefty, Tom Gorzelanny, was signed last week. Gonzalez pitched in 47 games for the National League East Division champion Washington Nationals last season, compiling a 3.03 earned run average and limiting left-handed batters to a .179 batting average. The deal won’t be official until next week because Major League Baseball offices are closed until after the New Year. The Brewers need to clear a spot on the 40-man roster for Gonzalez.

University of Wisconsin basketball coach Bo Ryan’s mother has died at the age of 86. Louise Ryan died in Florida last Thursday. Ryan has traveled to Florida three times this year when he had a break in the schedule. His father Butch is also said to be struggling with health issues. Ryan said in a story published in the Wisconsin State Journal nine years ago that he learned about perseverance from his mother. The Badgers take on Samford this afternoon at 1 p.m. at the Kohl Center in Madison.

The Milwaukee Bucks have a strong backcourt with Brandon Jennings and Monta Ellis – but neither is getting much love among NBA All-Star voters. The latest fan voting totals were released yesterday – and Ellis was sixth among Eastern Conference guards with just over 71,000 votes. Jennings was 10th among East guards with 49-thousand. Former Marquette guard Dwayne Wade of Miami has the most votes among those guards with 646-thousand. Former Buck Ray Allen of Miami is fifth with 195-thousand. There are no Milwaukee players in the Top-15 vote-getters for Eastern Conference forwards and centers. LeBron James of Miami tops that group with 970-thousand votes. Kobe Bryant of the Lakers is the overall-leading vote-getter with 977-thousand. The NBA All-Star Game will be played February 17th in Houston. The Bucks have not had an All-Star since Michael Redd in 2004.
