Panthers crown two champs at Bi-State

Ellsworth High School wrestlers Jens Lantz and Gabe Frandsen were both Bi-State Classic champs winning their respective weight classes Saturday evening.

LA CROSSE - Ellsworth High School wrestlers Jens Lantz and Gabe Frandsen were both Bi-State Classic champs winning their respective weight classes Saturday evening at the La Crosse Center.

Lantz easily won the championship match at 120 pounds by a 14-3 major decision over Cole Martin of Lancaster. He also had two pins and a technical fall through the tournament as well. His toughest match of the tournament was the semifinal bout Saturday morning against Muskego's Austin Quartullo, which he won 2-1.

Frandsen had a dominating performance in the Bi-State, getting four pins, including the championship match at 170 over Hudson's Dima Hawksford in 5:17.

The No. 3 ranked Panthers finished second in Division 2 behind No. 1 ranked Luxemburg-Casco 290.5 to 207. The Spartans had more place winners than EHS by an 8-5 margin but L-C was shutout when it came to individual champions. Ellsworth came into the meet handicapped when it came to points as injuries removed two starters, Dan Langer and Logan Kemmerer, from their line-up and were close to having additional place winners as well if not for losses late in the wrestleback rounds.

Those who did place were Brad Cain, sixth at 132; Tristan Mueller, 11th at 138 and Hank Holdorf, ninth at 182. Holdorf won his ninth place match by 1-0 decision over Lancaster's David Chadd.

Wausau West, ranked No. 1 in Division 1, won both Division 1 and the whole entire meet with a score of 321 points. Lancaster, the top team in Division 3, took first in Division 3 with 246 points.

Ellsworth is back in action next weekend at the nationally-renowned Cheesehead Invitational in Kaukauna.
