Sunday State Sports Briefs: Marquette wins despite sloppy play

MILWAUKEE - The Marquette Golden Eagle admit it – sometimes they play down to the level of their competition. Making 20 turnovers Saturday night, coach Buzz Williams’ squad allowed North Carolina Central hang around a little too long before winning 75-66.

Marquette’s record is 9-3 entering Big East play Tuesday night against Connecticut. The Eagles put up some good number, hitting their first eight shots and connecting on 60 percent from the field for the game. They also hit 5-of-11 three-pointers and hit 22-of-27 free throws. Vander Blue and Junior Cadougan led the scoring with 16 points apiece. Todd Mayo came off the bench to score a dozen and grab six rebounds. Complicating things is the fact the Eagles have to open the Big East Conference season without Williams, who will serve a one-game suspension for a recruiting violation which resulted in the firing of one assistant coach.

Head coach Bobbie Kelsey’s explanation of her University of Wisconsin women’s basketball team’s 67-44 loss Saturday was simple: they didn’t hit open shots. The Badgers shot a season-low 24 percent while dropping the championship game of the Miami Holiday Invitational Saturday. Wisconsin’s record falls to 8-5. Jacki Gulczynski led Wisconsin with 16 points. Cassie Rochel led the Badgers with nine rebounds and five blocked shots.

Jordan Aaron poured in 34 points to lead the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee to a 95-80 win over Ohio Dominican Saturday at the Klotsche Center. It was just the fourth win in 14 games for the Panthers. Aaron got help from Paris Gulley’s 20 points and seven rebounds. Milwaukee led by just four points at half-time, but pulled away after that. The defeat was the seventh in a row for Division II Ohio Dominican.

Things like byes and rushing records aren’t the focus for Green Bay head coach Mike McCarthy or Minnesota head coach Leslie Frazer. Just win. Everything else will take care of itself. A win for the Packers would mean a first round bye in the NFC playoffs. If the Vikings can beat the Packers for the first time in six tries it would be their first postseason action since 2009 and would likely mean a rematch at Lambeau Field in the wild-card round. The 9-6 Vikes can make the playoffs with a loss, but it is complicated. If they drop today’s home game, they would need the Bears, the Cowboys and the Giants to all lose. Minnesota running back Adrian Peterson gouged the Packer defense for 210 yards the last time the two teams met December 2nd in a 23-14 loss. He needs 208 yards today to break the all-time NFL rushing record set by Eric Dickerson’s record.
