LOS ANGELES - University of Wisconsin football players say they’ll be ready for Stanford’s 3-4 defense, when the two teams play in tomorrow’s Rose Bowl in Pasadena.
Only two teams used three-down linemen against the Badgers this season – Utah State and Penn State. Left tackle Rick Wagner says the Stanford 3-4 poses more of a mental game, because the defensive players do a lot of shifting. Stanford linebacker Chase Thomas says the Wisconsin offense does a lot of shifting at the line as well – and linebacker A.J. Tarpley says the Cardinal will try to keep the Badgers guessing on where their fourth and sometimes fifth linebackers go on each play. Tarpley says Wisconsin runs the ball more than most of Stanford’s opponents this year – and it will be a challenge to adjust. Badgers’ quarterback Curt Phillips said it was great to have a month of preparation for Stanford’s schemes.
The players made their comments at yesterday’s Rose Bowl Media Day. The Badger players and coaches attended a pep rally Sunday in downtown Los Angeles.
