MInnesota Sports Briefs: U women's hoops team wins in double OT over Creighton

(Minneapolis, MN) -- University of Minnesota star basketball guard Rachel Banham scored 39 points to lead Minnesota to a come-from-behind, double overtime win over Creighton yesterday at Williams Arena.
The Gophers trailed by as many as 20 points in the first half, and were behind 52-33 with ten-minutes left in the game. The Gophers closed the final ten-minutes of the contest on a 25-6 run to send the game into overtime. Each team scored 14 points in the first overtime, pushing the tilt to a second extra frame. The Gophers were 21-for-22 from the free throw line in the victory. Minnesota is now 11-3 on the season and will open Big Ten play on Thursday at Michigan State.

A new year's eve Big Ten opener is set for Williams Arena today. The 11th-ranked Golden Gopher men's basketball team entertains No. 19 Michigan State to begin the conference slate. The Gophers are 12-1 on the season, coming off of a 25-point win over Lafayette on December 22nd. 11-2 Michigan State beat Texas the same day. Tip-off is set for 1 p.m. The game is close to a sellout.

The Minnesota Timberwolves don't play again until Wednesday night when they visit Utah. The Wolves are 14-13 on the season, tied for the eighth spot in the NBA Western Conference. Utah lost last night 107-96 at the LA Clippers to fall to 15-17.

Minnesota State-Mankato skated by Connecticut 3-1 last night in Connecticut. Forward Johnny McInnis netted a pair of goals for the Mavericks, who have been one of the WCHA surprise teams this season along with Michigan Tech, which won the Great Lakes Invitational for the first time since 1980.

Bemidji State let a 2-0 lead slip away and lost to Massachusetts 4-3 last night in New Hampshire in men's college hockey. BSU is now 5-9-3 on the season and will play against New Hampshire later today.
