MILWAUKEE - For the first time since he became a Milwaukee Buck, guard Monta Ellis has been named Eastern Conference player of the week.
Ellis led the Bucks to a 2-1 record and almost made it a 3-0 sweep with late-game heroics against Detroit. Milwaukee lost that game 96-94, after beating Brooklyn and Miami. He averaged 21 points, eight assists and four steals, shooting 46 percent from the field and hitting 8-of-14 three-pointers.

University of Wisconsin women’s basketball guard Taylor Wurtz is out for the rest of the season with a recurring back problem. The senior guard has taken a medical redshirt which allows her to return next year. Coach Bobbie Kelsey said Wurtz will have surgery on Thursday, and she’ll have a 6-to-8 week recovery period. Kelsey said the long-term health of the 6-foot Wurtz is the most important thing – and the coach experts Wurtz to come back stronger next year, and finish her Badger career on the court. Wurtz has missed eight games with her back injury, after averaging 12 points in the season’s first five contests. She was a third-team All-Big Ten selection a year ago.
