SALT LAKE CITY, Utah - Utah forward Gordon Hayward scored a game-high 17 points off the bench to help the Jazz drop the Timberwolves 106-84 last night in Salt Lake City.

Enes Kanter added 15 points and eight rebounds as a reserve for Utah, which snapped a three-game slide. Paul Millsap chipped in with 14 points in the win. Kevin Love posted 13 points and 10 rebounds for Minnesota, which has lost three-of-four. Alexey Shved also had 13 points in the setback. Andrei Kirilenko had 12 points and seven rebounds in his first game against the Jazz in Utah. Kirilenko spent 10 seasons in Utah. Minnesota is at Denver tonight.

The University of Minnesota women's basketball team will open Big Ten Conference play tonight at Michigan State. Minnesota is 11-3 on the season, while MSU is 12-1. Meanwhile, the Gopher men's squad is already 1-0 in the Big Ten after Monday's win over the Michigan State men. Tubby Smith's team will host Northwestern on Sunday night in Williams Arena at 6 p.m.

The Unites States world junior hockey team skated by Canada 5-1 this morning in one semifinal of the 2013 World Junior Championships in Ufa, Russia. Chanhassen native Mike Reilly, a member of the University of Minnesota's mens team, assisted on one of the U.S. goals in the win. Wayzata native Mario Lucia, the son of Golden Gopher head coach Don Lucia, did not play in this game. The Americans are coached by South St. Paul native Phil Housley, one of the top American players of all time. He is the high school coach at Stillwater. Team USA will play in Saturday's championship game against the winner of the other semifinal between Sweden and Russia, which is being played this morning.

The NHL and the Players' Association met twice on Wednesday to continue talks for a new Collective Bargaining Agreement. Earlier Wednesday, the NHLPA made a response to the latest offer from the league. Both sides are meeting again Thursday morning with a mediator. The Wild were scheduled to play at Winnipeg last night and at home against Calgary tonight. All NHL games have already been canceled through January 14th. NHL commissioner Gary Bettman says a regular season schedule of 48 games must start by January 19th.
