Thursday State Sports Briefs: Cobb and Nelson practice with Packers on limited basis

GREEN BAY - Green Bay Packers’ receivers Randall Cobb and Jordy Nelson practiced on a limited basis today, after sitting out yesterday’s workout with various ailments.

Cobb had flu-like symptoms. Coach Mike McCarthy said the second-year pro is still under the weather – but he managed to practice plays that were set up for him. Cobb is expected to play on Saturday night, when the Packers take on the 49’ers in San Francisco in an NFC divisional playoff. Nelson’s expected to play, too, as he continues to deal with an ankle problem suffered near the end of last weekend’s Wild Card win against Minnesota. Receiver Jarrett Boykin missed practice again with an ankle injury – and McCarthy does not expect him to play against the 49’ers. The only other who didn’t practice was defensive end Jerel Worthy, who’s out for the rest of the playoffs with a knee injury.

The Green Bay Packers’ defensive line breathed a sigh of relief after last weekend’s win over Minnesota. But it didn’t last long, because they know they’ll have another huge challenge this week. Ryan Pickett said he and the rest of the Packers’ front seven were satisfied in holding the Vikings’ Adrian Peterson to 99 yards in the Wild Card game, after giving up 409 yards in two earlier contests. But the Packer “D” will face another elite running back this Saturday night, in San Francisco’s Frank Gore. Gore ran for 112 yards against Green Bay in their regular season opener last September. That included a 23-yard touchdown run in the Niners’ 30-to-22 victory over the Pack at Lambeau Field. The 49’ers ran for 186 yards as a team in that game – the most the Packers gave up to any team other than the Vikings. San Francisco relied on power sweeps in that Opening Day victory, as the 49’ers were not winning the interior battle of the trenches. It remains to be seen, of course, what the Niners will try to do on Saturday night. Pickett says he’ll expect more of the same from San Francisco – but the Niners will be facing a Green Bay defense that made big strides as the season went on.

Jeremy Ross has a chance to make some big kickoff returns on Saturday night, when the Green Bay Packers play at San Francisco in their divisional playoff. If it gets to be too many returns, it would not be good news for the Packers – because it would mean that the 49’ers are scoring a lot. But San Francisco is second-to-last in the NFL in kickoff coverage, averaging about 27 yards per return – and they’re about average in the league with touchbacks 45-percent of the time. So if the Packers need some big runbacks, there’s a chance that Ross could get a few. David Akers booted a 63-yard field goal when the Niners beat the Packers back in September. But he’s gone downhill since then, and the 49’ers have brought in veteran Billy Cundiff to compete against him. Niners’ coach Jim Harbaugh has not said which kicker he’ll go with on Saturday – or if he’ll use both. Ross became the Packers’ main kick returner after Randall Cobb hurt an ankle in the second-to-last regular season game against Tennessee. Cobb was back for last weekend’s Wild Card win over Minnesota – and he returned punts while Ross continued taking kickoffs. Cobb averaged just four-point-three yards on four punt returns.

It will be old-home-week for Packers’ quarterback Aaron Rodgers, who grew up in northern California. Rodgers will play his second game at Candlestick Park in San Francisco on Saturday night, when the Pack faces the 49’ers in their NFC divisional playoff contest. Rodgers’ first game at the ‘Stick was a pre-season outing in 2008. He said the stadium has a lot of tradition – and he saw a few baseball games there when he was growing up, plus a game during his college years as California. Meanwhile, 49’ers quarterback Colin Kaepernick said he grew up as a Packers’ fan, even though he only lived in Wisconsin for the first four years of his life. He was born in Milwaukee, and he lived in Fond du Lac and New London before moving to southern California. Kaepernick said the Packers were the only team he watched growing up. In his words, “I remember growing up watching Brett Favre every Sunday.”

John Dorsey, the Packers’ director of football operations, has reportedly been interviewed for the general manager’s job in Kansas City. Two media outlets said the Chiefs interviewed Dorsey yesterday. If he gets the job, he’ll work again with new Chiefs’ coach Andy Reid – who was a Packers’ assistant from 1992-through-’98. KC is looking for a new GM to replace Scott Paoli.

________________________________________________________________________

The University of Wisconsin’s new football coach is almost finished hiring his first staff in Madison. Media reports say Gary Andersen will bring in Jay Boulware to coach the Badgers’ tight ends – and he’s reportedly trying to get Utah’s Aaron Roderick to be the wide receivers’ coach. The 40-year-old Boulware has been with Andersen before, as the tight ends’ and special teams’ coordinator at Utah in 2005-and-’06. Most recently, he’s been the tight ends and special teams’ coach at Auburn since 2009. Boulware has also been an assistant at Iowa State and Northern Illinois. Roderick has been with Utah since 2005.

The UW-Milwaukee women’s basketball team will play its first game of 2013 tonight at home against Wright State. It’s the Horizon League opener for both squads. The Panthers went 4-8 in their non-conference schedule, capping it off with a 10-point victory over Drake on December 29th. Four starters for UWM scored in double figures, led by Ashley Green with 23. Wright State comes in at 6-7. The Raiders have the league’s pre-season player-of-the-year in Kim Demmings. She’s averaging 20 points, six rebounds, and four assists per contest. K.C. Elkins is Wright State’s only other scorer in double figures, averaging almost 10-and-a-half per night. Sami Tucker needs 24 points to become the 17th women’s player in Milwaukee history to score a-thousand points for her career. Also tonight, the Wisconsin women host Iowa. And the UW-Parkside women and men are both at home against Rockhurst.

The Milwaukee Brewers will hold their annual fan festival on Sunday, January 27th. “Brewers On Deck” will take place from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. at the Delta Center in downtown Milwaukee. The lineup was announced today. Thirty-two members of the Brewers’ roster will be there – including MVP finalist Ryan Braun and the team’s other stars. Manager Ron Roenicke and his coaches will also be on hand, along with minor league prospects, Brewers’ alumni, and broadcasters. The day will feature a number of games and family activities, autographs, and lots of baseball talk. Ticket information is available at Brewers.com.

The Green Bay Packers’ all-time leading scorer is back in the NFL. Ryan Longwell beat out three other kickers to finish the playoffs with the Seattle Seahawks. He’ll replace Steven Hauschka, who strained a calf in last Sunday’s Wild Card victory at Washington. Seahawks’ coach Pete Carroll said he needed a kicker because Hauschka did not have the ability to make kickoffs. Longwell will handle all phases of Seattle’s kicking game on Sunday, when the Seahawks play at Atlanta in an NFC divisional playoff contest. He’s a native of the Seattle region, and he says he’s excited to play for his hometown Seahawks. The 38-year-old Longwell played nine seasons in Green Bay and then six in Minnesota before the Vikings cut him almost a year ago. He has not stepped on a football field since. He scored 1,054 points during his tenure with the Packers, with a team-record 226 field goals. Longwell is also the NFL’s 13th all-time leading scorer with 1,687 points. And he’s the fifth most accurate kicker in league history, making just over 82-percent of his field goal attempts. If Seattle can win at Atlanta on Sunday – and if the Packers win at San Francisco on Saturday night – Longwell would make a return to Lambeau Field for the NFC title game on January 20th.

Packers’ tight end Ryan Taylor partially won an appeal of his $21,000 dollar fine for an illegal blind-side block during a punt return against Arizona on November fourth. The fine was reduced to $15,000 dollars. But Taylor asked that the fine be totally eliminated. He threw a hard block on the Cardinals’ Rashad Johnson. Taylor argued that it was a clean play, and a penalty flag was not thrown.

The University of Wisconsin women’s basketball team will try for a third time tonight to win its first Big Ten Conference game. The Badgers will host Iowa, after losing by five points to Minnesota at home last Sunday. Wisconsin played solid defense in that game, holding the Gophers to 13 points below their season average. The Badgers have a three-game losing streak. They’re 0-2 in the conference, and 8-7 overall. The Hawkeyes have won four straight games in Madison, and eight-of-their-last-nine. But Wisconsin is 6-2 at home this season – and they average 23 more points in Madison than they do on the road, and they have seven more rebounds in home contests. Iowa native Morgan Paige leads the Badgers in scoring with 16-and-a-half points per game. Iowa comes in a 12-4 overall, and 1-1 in the Big Ten. They’re coming off a four-point home loss to Michigan last Sunday. Racine standout Samantha Logic returns to her home state with the Hawkeyes. She had 20 points, 13 rebounds, and eight assists in her first game against Wisconsin a year ago. Also tonight, the UW-Milwaukee women are at home against Wright State. And the UW-Parkside women-and-men host Rockhurst.

________________________________________________________________________

Three women’s basketball teams are tied for the lead in the Northern Athletics Conference North Division – and all three have different opponents tonight. Concordia-Mequon, Alverno of Milwaukee, and Madison Edgewood are all 6-2 in league play. Concordia plays at Marian of Fond du Lac. Alverno travels across town to play the Milwaukee School of Engineering. And Edgewood hosts Maranatha Baptist, which is fourth in the north at 4-2. Wisconsin Lutheran leads the women’s South Division standings at 6-0. Also tonight, there’s one NAC men’s contest. Lakeland is at home in Sheboygan against Maranatha Baptist.

Two Wisconsin golfers will play in the Sony Open which starts today in Honolulu, Hawaii. Jerry Kelly of Madison had to use a one-time career exemption to get a full ride on the PGA Tour this year. He was scheduled to tee off at 11:40 this morning. Pewaukee native Mark Wilson won an early tournament last year, and he tied for 11th at the weather-delayed Hyundai Tournament of Champions which ended on Tuesday in Kapalua Hawaii. Wilson had a noon tee time. The Sony Open is the first PGA tournament of 2013 with a full field. Wilson won the event in 2011, and Kelly won it in 2002. Steve Stricker of Madison went home to recover from nerve damage in his upper left thigh. He recently said he would only compete in about a dozen tournaments this year anyway, so he can spend more time with his family.

Two University of Wisconsin men’s hockey forwards are among 77 nominated for the Hobey Baker Award, which is given each spring to the nation’s top player. Juniors Mark Zengerle and Michael Mersch are the Badgers’ representatives on the ballot. An Internet fan vote accounts for one-percent of the total scores. You’ll find the ballot at HobeyBakerAward.com. Mersch is Wisconsin’s leading scorer with 17 points, including a team-high 12 goals. Zengerle has 10 points, and was the nation’s top scorer last season. Wisconsin has had at least one Top-10 finalist for the Baker Award in each of the last four years. This year’s Top-10 will be announced March 21st, and the winner will be named on April 12th. Wisconsin’s Blake Geoffrion won the Baker Award in 2010.

The UW-Green Bay men’s basketball team won its Horizon League home opener last night, 58-45 over Loyola of Chicago. The Ramblers only made five shots in the first half. They shot just 19-percent before trailing 28-to-12 at the break. Green Bay never trailed, and the Phoenix out-shot Loyola 45-to-32 percent for the game. Keifer Sykes had 11 points and nine assists as Green Bay improved to 1-2 in the conference and 7-9 overall. Devon Turk was the only Loyola player to score in double figures. He had 11. The Ramblers ended a three-game road winning streak, as they fell to 1-2 in the Horizon League and 10-5 overall. Green Bay’s next game is on Saturday against Illinois-Chicago at home.

Milwaukee Brewers’ pitcher Arcenio Leon cleared waivers yesterday, and he was assigned outright to the Crew’s Triple-“A” farm club at Nashville. The 26-year-old Leon was taken off Milwaukee’s 40-man roster week to make room for Washington free-agent reliever Mike Gonzalez, who signed with the Brewers this week. The Brewers claimed the right-handed Leon off waivers from Houston in November.

Madison Police have named a fourth suspect in the attack on Wisconsin running back Montee Ball in the early morning hours of August first. Media reports said 27-year-old Karlis Griffin of Madison is the latest suspect. That leaves one of the five purported attackers unidentified. Police said five men jumped Ball as he walking on a street close to the UW campus around the time the bars were closing. Reports said he was attacked in retaliation for a large fight a few days before, which involved other members of the Badgers. Ball was there, but he said he didn’t take part in the fight. Two defendants are in a first offenders’ program after pleading guilty to battery charges. Another defendant, Deonte Wilson, is scheduled to enter a plea next week. Court records show that an arrest warrant for Griffin was issued in early October for another incident which happened after Ball was attacked.
