Koivu returns from Finland, skates with Wild for first time this year

ST. PAUL -- While the Minnesota Wild and the rest of the NHL continue to wait for training camps to begin for real, players continue to make their way to Xcel Energy Center in preparation.

On Wednesday, Wild captain Mikko Koivu returned from Finland and skated with his teammates for the first time, as did forward Dany Heatley. The NHLPA is expected to ratify the CBA at some point this weekend and speculation has it that Wild training camp would begin Sunday with the season getting under way starting January 19th.

NHL players have begun voting on ratification of the new Collective Bargaining Agreement. The NHLPA says voting started last night at 8 p.m. Eastern and will continue for 36 hours, through tomorrow at 7 a.m. Secret ballots will be cast electronically and the results will be announced tomorrow morning. The NHL Board of Governors ratified the new 10-year CBA on Wednesday. The Board voted its approval by a 30-0 vote. If players approve the deal, training camps are expected to open on Sunday with the regular season expected to begin Saturday, January 19th. NHL commissioner Gary Bettman said the regular season schedule would be released as soon as the players ratify the CBA.

The Pittsburgh Penguins are reaching out to try and win back fans. The Penguins have announced they will offer free selected concession items and half-off all merchandise at their first four home games this season. The Pens will also offer free admission to fans for all training camp sessions next week. The team will also hold a week-long series of contests with prizes leading up to their home opener, including a pair of tickets to every home game during the 2013 regular season. NHL players will vote to ratify the new collective bargaining agreement on Friday and Saturday, with training camps expected to open on Sunday. The regular season is expected to begin Saturday, January 19th.
