MILWAUKEE - The Milwaukee Brewers still have four players eligible for salary arbitration next month.

Left-handed starter Chris Narveson took himself off that list by signing a one-year contract worth 840-thousand dollars. Narveson made a half-million dollars last season, when rotator cuff surgery kept him out for most of the year. Narveson only made two starts in 2012 – and he was 1-1 with an ERA of seven. Brewers’ center-fielder Carlos Gomez remains eligible for salary arbitration, along with closer John Axford, starter Marco Estrada, and newly-acquired reliever Burke Badenhop. Meanwhile, the Brewers signed veteran starter Kelvim Escobar to a minor league contract, with a chance to make the big club at Spring Training.

The right-handed Escobar has only pitched in one game in the Majors since 2007 due to shoulder problems. But he’s been showing off a strong arm in the Venezuelan Winter League. Scouts say he’s throwing in the mid-90-mile-an-hour range again, but his control remains a concern. The Brewers expect to use Escobar in their bullpen.
