Morning State Sports Briefs: Bucks look for third straight win under new coach
Wisconsin Sports-- The Milwaukee Bucks will try to go three games above .500 tonight when they host Detroit.
MILWAUKEE - The Milwaukee Bucks will try to go three games above .500 tonight when they host Detroit.
The Bucks lead the NBA in blocked shots with 260 this season, for an average of seven-point-six per night. Milwaukee had 15 blocks in its victory at Chicago on Wednesday night, and Bucks’ center Larry Sanders had seven of those blocks. The third-year Sanders is far-and-away the NBA leader in blocks, with an average of just over three-and-a-quarter per game. Serge Ibaka of Oklahoma City is a distant second at two-point-eight-six. In addition, Sanders has had four-or-more blocked shots in five straight games. That’s second only to Kareem Abdul-Jabbar in the Bucks’ record book. He had eight games in a row with four-or-more blocked shots in the 1973-74 season. Sanders has had solid leaps-and-timing on defense ever since he joined the Bucks from Vanderbilt in 2010. Bucks’ coach Jim Boylan says Sanders has gotten himself in excellent physical shape – and it allows him to be productive for a longer stretch of time. Tonight, the
Bucks will try to go 3-0 since Boylan took over for Scott Skiles on Monday. They’ll play a Pistons’ team that has won four-of-its-last-five, and is well-rested after losing at home to Charlotte last Sunday by seven points in overtime.

The University of Wisconsin women’s basketball team was held scoreless for over eight minutes in the second half last night, as the Badgers lost to Iowa 65-56 in Madison. The game was tied before Iowa’s big run started with 12 minutes to go. The Hawkeyes rattled off 14 straight points before Wisconsin’s Morgan Paige finally hit a three-pointer with 3:53 left. The Badgers got to within seven with just over two minutes left, but could get no closer. Wisconsin was out-shot 38-to-33 percent for the game, and the Hawkeyes had a dominant 45-25 rebounding edge. Paige led Wisconsin with 18 points. Morgan Johnson had 23 points and 11 rebounds to lead the Hawkeyes. And Racine native Samantha Logic almost had a triple-double for Iowa with 12 points, 10 boards, and nine assists. The Hawkeyes improved to 2-1 in the Big Ten, and 13-4 overall. Wisconsin fell to 0-3 in the conference, and 8-8 overall. The Badgers will play at Michigan on Sunday.

Kim Demmings scored 35 points last night to give the Wright State women a 71-61 victory at UW-Milwaukee in their Horizon League opener. The Raiders scored seven straight points in the final minute of the first half. They went up by 10 at the half and hung on from there. Demmings, a sophomore who’s the Horizon League pre-season player-of-the-year, made 13-of-her-20 shots from the floor. She hit 5-of-10 from three-point range. And Demmings had 17 points on the board by halftime. Wright State out-shot UWM 47-to-37 percent. Panthers’ coach Kyle Rechlicz said the Raiders prevented her team from scoring on its transition game, by holding the ball at center court as long as possible in its half-court offense. Sami Tucker led UWM with 17 points and 13 rebounds. Wright State improved to 7-7 overall. Milwaukee is now 4-9. Its next game is at Youngstown State next Thursday.

Milwaukee built up an 8-2 lead after three quarters, and the Wave out-scored the Comets 10-4 in the final period. Missouri fell to 7-8.
