Saturday State Sports Briefs: UW has big game with Illinois this afternoon
Wisconsin Sports-- Illinois comes into its fourth Big Ten Conference game needing a win in the worst way, but the Illini haven’t had much success recently against Wisconsin.
MADISON - Illinois comes into its fourth Big Ten Conference game needing a win in the worst way, but the Illini haven’t had much success recently against Wisconsin.
A loss would mean the 12th-ranked team has dropped four of its last six games, changing the momentum built up in a 12-0 start to the season. They bring a 14-3 record into the Kohl Center for this afternoon’s 1:15 p.m. tipoff. The Badgers have won 10 of the last 14 meetings between the teams. They are also 2-0 in Big Ten play and 11-4 overall.

There were no surprises in the Green Bay Packers’ official injury report for tomorrow night’s NFC divisional playoff game at San Francisco. Receiver Jarrett Boykin is listed as being out with an ankle injury, and defensive end Jerel Worthy is out with an injured knee. Several other Packers are listed as probable, and they’re expected to play against the 49’ers. They include receivers Randall Cobb and Jordy Nelson, running backs James Starks and Alex Green, tight end Jermichael Finley, and linebackers Clay Matthews and Dezman Moses. The San Francisco injury report includes no players ruled out for tonight’s game. Safety Dashon Goldson, linebacker Aldon Smith and defensive tackle Justin Smith were all limited in yesterday’s practice, but all three are listed as probable for today. Kickoff is at 7 p.m. Central Time from Candlestick Park in San Francisco.

The season got off to a rough start for both Wisconsin golfers who were competing at the PGA-Sony Open in Hawaii. Russell Henley broke a tie for the top spot to take a two-stroke lead going into today’s third round. Both Madison’s Jerry Kelly and Pewaukee native Mark Wilson missed the cut.

Local officials say hosting the Wisconsin high school girls basketball tournament next March could mean as much as three million dollars for the economy in Ashwaubenon. The head of the Greater Green Bay Convention and Visitors Bureau says the three day WIAA tournament at the Resch Center would be equal to about six large conventions coming to town. Twenty teams from all over Wisconsin will compete in five classifications from March 14th to the 16th. As it stands now, the tournament is scheduled to be played in Brown County this year and next. Negotiations past 2014 have not been started. The tournament was held in Madison in the past.
