U hockey teams start 2013 with wins
Minnesota Sports-- The start of the new year was a bright one for the University of Minnesota hockey teams as both the Gopher men and women were winners Friday.
MINNEAPOLIS - The start of the new year was a bright one for the University of Minnesota hockey teams as both the Gopher men and women were winners Friday.
The U women took care of North Dakota 6-3 at Ridder Arena before a crowd of over 2,000. Minnesota blasted its way to 5-0 lead before UND scored three goals in the third period. Amanda Kessel had a hat trick plus one as she scored four goals and assisted on another. Hannah Brandt and Kelly Terry both added goals for the Gophers. Winning goalie Noora Raty made 32 saves as the Fighting Sioux still outshot Minnesota 35-25. The No. 1 ranked Gophers are still unblemished so far this season 21-0-0.
The Gopher men used a five minute major on Alaska-Anchorage to score a pair of power play goals to rally from a 3-2 deficit in the third period to a 4-3 win. Nick Bjugstad and Ben Marshall both scored the game tying and game winning goals on the power play as the U was a blazing 3-for-6 on power play goals against the Seawolves. Bjugstad had two goals and Kyle Rau also added a goal and an assist in the Minnesota victory. Nate Schmidt had two assists. Winning goalie Adam Wilcox made 17 saves. Minnesota is 15-3-3 overall and 7-3-3 in the WCHA, however they're fourth place with 17 points, just two behind league-leading Denver.
