Sunday State Sports Briefs: Marquette grits out win over Pitt in OT
Wisconsin Sports-- It could have taken the heart out of the Marquette Golden Eagles when Pitt hit a three-pointer at the buzzer to tie the score. Instead, Marquette stayed unbeaten in the Big East, rolling to a 74-67 overtime victory Saturday.
PITTSBURGH - It could have taken the heart out of the Marquette Golden Eagles when Pitt hit a three-pointer at the buzzer to tie the score.
Instead, Marquette stayed unbeaten in the Big East, rolling to a 74-67 overtime victory Saturday.
Vander Blue led the way with 22 points. Davante Gardner was 6-for-6 from the floor, scoring 13 points and grabbing eight rebounds. Point guard Junior Cadougan suffered a leg injury in the victory. This is the first time in four years the Eagles have started the conference season with three straight wins, good for first place in the standings. Two of those wins were in overtime and the third was the one-point nail-biter against Georgetown. The Panthers were hurt badly by a poor performance at the free throw line, hitting just 13-of-26 and only 2-for-7 in the overtime. Marquette’s overall record improves to 12-3, while Pitt drops to 13-4.

Valparaiso’s Ryan Broekhoff hit 7-of-9 three points, scoring 26 points, with 10 rebounds and three blocked shots in the Crusaders’ 76-52 rout of the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee Saturday. The Panthers got 18 points from Paris Gulley and 14 from Demetrius Harris. Valpo led 33-20 at half and scored the first eight points of the second half. The Panther record falls to 4-13, including 0-3 in Horizon League play.

Brown scored 21, had eight rebounds and blocked four shots in the victory. The Phoenix have won five straight at home. They were trailing 43-40 with 4:48 left when they went on a 13-4 run. Though Green Bay had struggled at the free throw line earlier in the game, the team hit seven straight in the closing minutes. The Phoenix evened their Horizon League record at 2-2 with the win. They are 8-9 overall.

The University of Wisconsin men’s hockey team is suddenly one of the hottest teams in all of college hockey. John Ramage scored the winning goal for the second straight night as the Badgers defeated Minnesota State in overtime, 2-1 at the Verizon Wireless Center. That gave Wisconsin its first-ever weekend sweep of the Mavericks in Mankato and ran its string of consecutive games without a loss to 10. During that time the Badgers are 7-0-3. Jefferson Dahl broke the scoreless tie for the Badgers in the second period with an assist from Ramage. The teams ended regulation tied at one, then the senior from St. Louis gave his team the win with a goal while six seconds was showing on the clock. Wisconsin’s overall record is now 8-7-5, including 6-5-5 in the WCHA. Joel Rumpel got the win in goal, stopping 35 shots. The Badgers return home next weekend for a big non-conference series against Miami of Ohio.

A weekend sweep of Ohio State moves the University of Wisconsin women’s hockey team into second place in the WCHA. The Badgers whipped the Buckeyes at LaBahn Arena in Madison last night, 2-1. Special teams played a big part in deciding the outcome. The first two goals were scored on the power play. Madison Packer put Wisconsin on the scoreboard in the first period. Halfway through the third period, Alev Kelter got loose on a breakaway and managed to slip the game-winner into the net as she was falling down. Wisconsin’s record improves to 14-6-2, including 10-6-2 in the WCHA.

The Kansas City Chiefs have hired John Dorsey as their new general manager. Dorsey, the longtime director of college scouting for the Green Bay Packers, will be introduced in a press conference Monday. Dorsey becomes the sixth GM in franchise history. He replaces Scott Pioli, who had been the GM since January 2009. The Chiefs and Pioli parted ways earlier this month prior to Andy Reid being named the new head coach.
