State Basketball Roundup: Badgers travel to Bloomington to play second-ranked Indiana

BLOOMINGTON, Ind. - The University of Wisconsin men’s basketball team will play at second-ranked Indiana tonight. The Hoosiers have won 11 straight in Bloomington.

They’re 3-0 in the Big Ten and 15-1 overall, after beating Minnesota at home by seven points on Saturday. Wisconsin is also 3-0 in conference play, and they’re 12-4 overall. The Badgers raced out to a 20-point halftime lead in beating Illinois by 23 at home on Saturday. Freshman forward Sam Dekker says the Badgers will need another fast start tonight to have any chance of beating Indiana. He said the Hoosier crowd will be on them from the beginning – and they’ll need to withstand the first 4-to-5 minutes. Indiana has five players averaging in double figures, led by Cody Zeller with almost 17 points per game. The Badgers will need to take care of the ball. They have the fewest turnovers in the Big Ten, with just under nine-per-contest.

Despite Indiana’s record, Wisconsin has owned the Hoosiers in recent years. The Badgers have won their last 10 games against Indiana – and former Marquette coach Tom Crean is 0-8 against Wisconsin since arriving in Bloomington in 2008.

UW-Stevens Point has moved up three places to seventh in the new Division-Three men’s college basketball poll from D3hoops.com. The Pointers are 14-and-2 overall with a 7-and-0 conference record and a four-game winning streak. UW-Whitewater dropped four spots in the new poll to No. 15. The Warhawks are 12-3 overall, after being upset at UW-Superior 69-66 last Saturday. La Crosse also received votes along with Saint Norbert, Carroll, and Stout. Saint Thomas of Saint Paul is the new men’s Number-One, after North Central suffered its first loss and fell to fifth.

In the D-Three women’s poll, Stevens Point rose one place to 15th, with a 13-3 overall record and an eight-game winning streak. Whitewater dropped nine spots to 24th, after losing by eight points at Superior last Saturday. Superior received votes in the new poll, as did Carthage. De Pauw remains the women’s Number-One.

Germantown is still the boys’ Division-One leader in the new AP state high school basketball poll. Milwaukee Hamilton remains second, and both are 13-0. Madison Memorial is third, followed by Sussex Hamilton. Seymour remains atop Division 2 with Onalaska second, La Crosse Central third, and Rice Lake fourth. Wisconsin Dells is still the Division 3 leader, followed by Lodi, Little Chute, and La Crosse Aquinas. In Division 4, Whitefish Bay Dominican is still No. 1 with Cuba City second, Elk Mound third, and Laconia fourth. And in Division 5, Randolph and Green Bay Northeast Wisconsin Lutheran are tied for first. Clayton and Monticello are third-and-fourth.

In the AP girls’ poll, De Pere remains in first place in Division 1 at 12-0. Superior is second followed by Oak Creek and Kimberly. New London is still at the top of Division 2, followed by Monona Grove, Baraboo, and New Berlin Eisenhower. Neillsville is still the Division-Three leader with East Troy, Brodhead, and Kewaunee second-through-fourth. Amherst is the new Division 4 leader, moving up one spot from a week ago. Algoma dropped one place to second, followed by Cuba City and Cameron. And in Division 5, Wisconsin Rapids Assumption is in first place after being third a week ago. Barneveld dropped to second, with Owen-Withee third and South Shore fourth.
