Ugly loss for Raiders against Elk Mound

ELMWOOD - There's a reason, actually several reasons, Elk Mound hasn't lost a game this season so far an they displayed them Tuesday night in a 49-33 win over Elmwood.

First was defense as the No. 4 ranked Mounders held Elmwood without a point in the first quarter. EM built up a 13-0 lead. The Raiders first basket didn't come until the 5:54 mark of the second quarter and Elmwood struggled with its outside shooting for much of the contest. Only four players scored for Elmwood led by Logan Wolf's 19 points.

Second was lack of mistakes. EHS could not force the turnovers they needed to fuel their fastbreak offense. Elk Mound dictated the pace of the game throughout.

And depth. Elk Mound lost its big 6-6 junior center Dexter Curry in the third quarter due to foul trouble and Elwmood had a golden opportunity to surge in front in his absence. But equally big James Wolf came into the game to adequately replace Curry and Elmwood, who trailed 20-14 at halftime, was down again by six points at 31-25 heading into the fourth quarter. A rested Curry came back into the game and scored two key baskets and grabbed several rebounds to put the Mounders up by 10 points again. He led EM in scoring with 12 points.

With the three Dunn-St. Croix Conference losses Elmwood, now 6-3 in the league, would need an EM collapse to get back into the title race. The Raiders are 10-3 overall and resume league play Friday at home vs. Plum City.
