Wednesday State Sports Roundup: Lakers pull away in the fourth to defeat Milwaukee
Wisconsin Sports-- The Milwaukee Bucks lost to a surging Lakers team in Los Angeles last night, 104-88.
LOS ANGELES - The Milwaukee Bucks lost to a surging Lakers team in Los Angeles last night, 104-88.
Kobe Bryant and Dwight Howard each scored 31 points, as LA won its second straight after a six-game losing streak. Lakers’ coach Mike D’Antoni had Bryant cover point guard Brandon Jennings – and Jennings said it was tightest full-court defense he’s faced as a pro. He only hit four shots in 14 attempts, and was limited to 12 points after averaging almost 25 in his last previous four games. The Bucks were down by six going into the fourth quarter, when the Lakers pulled away with a 21-to-7 run. The Bucks were out-shot 50-to-36 percent, and lost despite pulling down eight more rebounds than LA. Monta Ellis scored 17 for Milwaukee, which is 1-1 on its current road trip and 3-2 under new coach Jim Boylan.
The Bucks remain above .500 overall at 19-18. They’re slipping in the Central Division race, at four games behind Indiana. But the Bucks do have a four-game cushion at the moment for the eighth-and-final playoff spot in the NBA’s Eastern Conference, and they’re just a game behind Boston for the No. 7 slot. The Bucks’ next game is tomorrow night at Phoenix.

It’s been nine years since the Milwaukee Bucks have had an NBA All-Star – and Jim Boylan hopes his fellow coaches will consider guards Brandon Jennings and Monta Ellis. Boylan says both players have put up good numbers this season, and both deserve to get votes. Coaches will select the reserves for the All-Star Game after the Eastern and Western Conference starters are announced tomorrow night. The fans vote for the starters – and former Marquette guard Dwayne Wade of Miami is among the leaders for the Eastern Conference guards. Ellis is sixth in the fan voting at that spot, and Jennings is 10th. Both average around 18 points and five assists per game – and both have been shooting in the neighborhood of 40-percent. The Bucks have a winning record at the moment, which could help their cause. The last Milwaukee All-Star was Michael Redd in 2004. This year’s All-Star Game will be played in Houston on February 17th.

The Marquette University women's basketball team won their first Big East Conference game last night, 56-53 at Seton Hall. The game was tied with 1:28 left when Arlesia Morse made a lay-up to put the Golden Eagles up by two. And she made a trio of free throws down the stretch to help Marquette seal its victory. Morse and Katherine Plouffe both scored 13, as the Eagles dominated the boards with a 38-to-27 rebounding edge. Brittany Morris scored a game-high 18 points for Seton Hall, which dropped to 2-2 in the Big East and 7-10 overall. Marquette improved to 1-2 in the conference and 9-7 overall. They’ll play at Pittsburgh on Saturday.

The Marquette men’s basketball team will try to go 4-0 in the Big East tonight, when it hosts Seton Hall. The 25th-ranked Golden Eagles are 12-3 overall – and they’ve won 18 straight at the Bradley Center, dating back to December of 2011. Point guard Junior Cadougan is listed as probable for tonight. He injured an ankle last Saturday in Marquette’s overtime win at Pittsburgh, and sophomore Derrick Wilson filled in. Seton Hall comes in at 1-3 in the conference, and 12-5 overall. The Pirates have lost three straight games, after falling to Providence by 12 points last Sunday. Junior swingman Fuquan Edwin led the Pirates with 17 points in that game – and he’s 31 away from scoring a-thousand for his career. Marquette hopes to go 4-0 in conference play for the first time in four years, and only the fourth time since 1989 when the Eagles first had a league affiliation.

Also, Superior plays at River Falls. On the women’s side, Whitewater has the WIAC lead at 6-1. Oshkosh, Stevens Point, and Superior are all a game back at 5-2. University of Wisconsin men’s hockey defenseman John Ramage has been named the WCHA’s defensive player-of-the-week. He scored the game-winning goals last Friday and Saturday, when the Badgers swept Minnesota State on the road for the first time. Ramage, a senior captain, had seven shots on goal during the series with a rating of plus-three. He was also a big part of the Badgers’ penalty-killing units, which fought off 11-of-12 power play attempts.

Three women’s basketball teams are tied for first in the Northern Athletics Conference North Division – and two of them will square off against each other tonight. Concordia-Mequon will host Edgewood. Both are 8-2 in league play, along with Alverno. Maranatha Baptist is a game-and-a-half back in fourth. Wisconsin Lutheran has a three-game lead over Benedictine in the South Division. Lutheran is 7-0 in the NAC, and will host Dominican this evening. Also, Marian plays at Milwaukee School of Engineering. In the CCIW, Carthage will play a men’s-and-women’s double-header at Elmhurst.

Felicia Carlson of Beloit College has been named the women’s indoor track athlete of the week in the Midwest Conference. Carlson, a sophomore, set a new Beloit record in the 55-meters, winning it in seven-point-four-three seconds at the Carthage Private Schools’ Invite last weekend. She also won the 200-meters. Joe Puntoriero of Knox College is the honored men’s track athlete.

Jordan Petersen of UW-Eau Claire and Sam Barber of Stevens Point are the men’s-and-women’s basketball players of the week in the WIAC. Petersen, a senior guard, averaged 14-and-a-half points and five-and-a-half rebounds in a pair of conference victories for Eau Claire last week. He also had three assists in each game. Barber, a senior guard, scored 33 points in 25 minutes in Stevens Point’s 88-57 win at UW-Stout. And she had 25 points and seven rebounds against La Crosse with four blocked shots. The WIAC also recognized Stephen Hanko and Mikayla Beuch, both of La Crosse, in swimming – Andrew Janny and Tessa Kahring, both of La Crosse, in diving – Megan Love of Whitewater and Brittany DeZiel of Stout in gymnastics – Adam Cardwell of River Falls in men’s hockey – and Izzy Balsiger of La Crosse in wrestling.

Four Milwaukee Brewers remain eligible for salary arbitration – and unless they agree to new contracts, they’ll be exchange salary proposals with the team on Friday. The four players are outfielder Carlos Gomez, starter Marco Estrada, closer John Axford, and newly-acquired reliever Burke Badenhop. Most players reach new contract agreements before their arbitration hearings begin in February. Any unresolved matters will go to a three-person arbitration panel – and they’ll choose either the team’s offer or the player’s request.

The Milwaukee Brewers have already sold a million tickets for their games at Miller Park this year. Chief Operating Officer Rick Schlesinger said today that sales for a variety of season ticket packages sent the Brewers past the one-million mark on the second-earliest date in the team’s 44-year history. The earliest date for achieving the milestone was just over a year ago, on December 22nd of 2011. That was about two months after the Brewers came within two victories of making the World Series – and fans were still glowing over their successful 2011 campaign.
