Spring Valley/Elmwood wrestlers stayed unbeaten in tough D-SC
Although there are two more Dunn-St. Croix Conference dual meets left to wrestle, Spring Valley/Elmwood went further on its way to capture its third straight conference title after a 41-25 win over St. Croix Central Thursday.
SPRING VALLEY - Although there are two more Dunn-St. Croix Conference dual meets left to wrestle, Spring Valley/Elmwood went further on its way to capture its third straight conference title after a 41-25 win over St. Croix Central Thursday.
With the meet starting at 285 pounds the No. 10 ranked Redbirds needed to get a sizable lead before SCC's top wrestlers in the upper middleweights stepped on the mat and they did so. Mike Roesler moved up from 220 pounds to heavyweight fired up the big crowd in the Spring Valley High School with a pinfall in 4:50 and that was followed up by pinfall by Andrew Webb at 106 and major decision for Derek Huebel at 113.
SCC's Lukas Smith won at 120 but SVE won the next five matches in a row. Three key wins were a overtime win by freshman Logan Newton over Central sophomore Ryan Gulich at 126 by 6-4 score after a takedown by Newton in the first overtime period. Another were a pair of pinfalls which the beat the scoreboard buzzer, the first by Jed Schlegel at 138 in 5:52 and by pin by Jaron Turner in 1:58 which clinched the dual meet in SVE's favor.
Also winning for SV/Elmwood in this stretch were Tyler Berg at 132 via major decision and Zach Newton at 145. Freshman Ethan Hofacker added to SVE's point total with his 2-1 decision over St. Croix senior Delfino Carrasco 2-1 at 195.
SVE improves to 6-4 overall and 2-0 in the league with two conference meets remaining, includng the one next Thursday at Mondovi. This weekend the Redbirds will be at the Shell Lake Duals Challenge.
