Weekend State Sports Briefs: Hart to miss first six weeks of Brewers' regular season
Wisconsin Sports-- Milwaukee Brewers’ first baseman Corey Hart will miss the first six weeks of the regular season after his previously-injured right knee acted up again
MILWAUKEE - Milwaukee Brewers’ first baseman Corey Hart will miss the first six weeks of the regular season after his previously-injured right knee acted up again.
Hart noticed swelling during an off-season workout – and an MRI confirmed a defect in the joint surface of the knee. He’ll need surgery, which team doctor William Raasch will perform next Tuesday. Hart is expected to be out for 3-to-4 months. Brewers’ officials say Hart is not sure about an incident that caused the knee to swell. The Brewers expect Mat Gamel to play at first while Hart is out. Also yesterday, the Brewers reached one-year contract agreements with all three of their remaining players who were eligible for salary arbitration. Closer John Axford got almost a 10-fold increase in his salary, from $525,000 last year to five-million this season. Axford helped the Brewers get to within two victories of a World Series in 2011. He struggled at times a year ago, but still managed to get 35 saves.

Former Milwaukee Braves shortstop Johnny Logan has been voted in to the Miller Park Walk of Fame. He got over 72 percent of the voters from sports reporters and team executives. Logan was a member of championship Braves teams in 1957 and 1958. He played in Milwaukee from 1953 to 1961, appearing in four All-Star games. He had a career batting average of .268 with 93 home runs. He will join Hank Aaron, Paul Molitor and Robin Young on the Walk of Fame.

A terrible start doomed the University of Wisconsin men's basketball team in their first Big Ten Conference loss of the season, 70-66, at Iowa. The Hawkeyes came out hot while the Badgers were hitting just one field goal in the first 10 minutes. With five minutes to go before half, Iowa had a 20-point lead. Badger sharpshooters started finding the range and they closed to within three points, 66-63, with :22 seconds to go. Free throws and a late Badger turnover helped Iowa hold on. The loss drops Wisconsin’s record to 13-5 and the Badger’s 4-1 conference mark drops them out of first, now standing a half-game behind Michigan State. George Marshall led Wisconsin scoring with 20 points. Sam Dekker had 13, but Jared Berggren was held to eight.

The final two points scored by Cincinnati’s Sean Kilpatrick gave the Bearcasts a 71-69 overtime win over Marquette. It was the first Big East Conference game loss of the season for the Golden Eagles. That layup with four seconds left gave Kilpatrick 36 points in the game. For Marquette it was a tale of two halves. The Eagles scored just 13 points in the first half, then roared back with 50 to tie the game in regulation. The overtime loss broke Marquette’s winning streak at six games. Vander Blue led Marquette scorers in the road contest with 19 points. Davante Gardner scored 15, including 13 from the free throw line. He hit two charity tosses with less than three seconds to go to tie the game at 63 and send it into overtime. Marquette’s record is 13-4, including 4-1 in the Big East. Syracuse is the only undefeated team in conference play.

The University of Wisconsin-Green Bay Phoenix continue their dominant play at home, ripping Cleveland State 77-50 yesterday. That was the team’s seventh straight victory at the Resch Center. Green Bay had five players in double figures, led by Jordan Fouse with 17 to go with 10 rebounds. Fouse also had four steals, four assists and three blocked shots. Green Bay shot 55 percent from the floor and out-rebounded the Vikings 41-18. The Phoenix improved their record to 10-9, including 4-2 in Horizon League play.

Youngstown State used hot shooting to edge the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee last night, 75-72. The visitors hit 50 percent from the floor. The Panthers led early in the game, but Youngstown State rallied and then led the rest of the way. Milwaukee cut the lead to one at 73-72 with just seconds to go when Austin Arians tipped in a missed shot. Arians and J.J. Panoske led the Panthers with 15 points apiece. Milwaukee’s record is now 5-14, including four losses in five Horizon League games.

Despite what we saw last weekend, the Green Bay Packers did improve their defense this past season. One thing coach Mike McCarthy promised to do was to cut down on the numbers of missed tackles. And the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel’s Bob McGinn counted 100 missed tackles in 18 games, including the playoffs. That’s way down from the Packers’ 140 missed tackles in 17 contests the year before. For the fourth year in a row, Clay Matthews was Green Bay’s top pass rusher – even though he played in less than 70-percent of the total snaps due to a hamstring injury. Matthews had 16 sacks. Mike Neal had the second-highest sacks with four-and-a-half. Quarterback Aaron Rodgers was sacked 10 more times this season for a total of 55. McGinn said the offensive line was responsible for 35 of those sacks. Left tackle Marshall Newhouse gave up 11-and-a-half sacks, the most by a Packers’ offensive lineman since Tony Mandarich surrendered 12-and-a-half sacks in 1990. Among the receivers, Greg Jennings dropped just one pass in 75 chances. In the last 20 years, McGinn said no Packers have completed an entire season without a drop – and Jennings is one of just nine during that stretch to have only one drop.

Milwaukee Admirals’ defenseman Victor Bartley will play in the American Hockey League All-Star Game. Bartley has been named to the Western Conference squad for their battle against the East on January 28th in Providence. Bartley has had five goals since December seventh. For the season, he has six goals and 13 assists. The Admirals have a two-game series at Abbotsford in Canada tomorrow and Sunday nights.

The 25th annual Badger State Winter Games began this weekend in central Wisconsin. Indoor events like bowling and archery are on the docket – and organizers are hoping for more snow in the coming week, so the outdoor events can take place the following weekend. Trap-shooting is a new activity this year. Over 700 participants have registered so far – and organizers expect more, since around 1,400 competed last year. Wausau’s Convention-and-Visitors Bureau bought the rights to the Badger State Games from the Wisconsin Sports Development Corporation in 2011. The director of the Games, Darren Schaefer, said the economic impact of the winter competition was over a half-million dollars last year.
