Lake Superior shipping numbers remain below average
Regional News-- It was a below-average year for Great Lakes freighters in 2012.
DULUTH/SUPERIOR - It was a below-average year for Great Lakes freighters in 2012.
The Lake Carriers’ Association reports the U.S.-flag ships working on the Great Lakes carrying 89 and a half million tons of dry-bulk cargo, down 4.6 percent from the year before. That figure is also below the five-year average. Iron shipments were off 4.3 percent and coal shipments fell to 17.6 million tons, well below the average of 22 and a half million.
Experts blame the drop-off, at least in part, to the phasing out of Canadian coal-fired electric plants.
