LA CROSSE - After a decade of planning, construction begins Monday on a new bridge for Interstate-90 just north of La Crosse over the Mississippi River.
It’s a four-year project, and officials say the freeway will stay open the entire time. However, various on-ramps will be closed for a number of months. Project manager Terry Ward says traffic from La Crosse to nearby La Crescent, Minnesota on I-90 will be shut down for an extended period.
The DOT’s in both Wisconsin and Minnesota coordinated their efforts on the $187-million-dollar bridge project. That’s because the state line falls right in the middle of the river. That’s not always the case to the north. At Hudson, Minnesota’s DOT has been handling the nuts-and-bolts of a new four-lane bridge over the Saint Croix River. Even so, Wisconsin’s covering half the costs – just like it does for other bridges that cross state lines.
