State Basketball Roundup: Badgers welcome Michigan St. to town tonight
Wisconsin Sports-- The University of Wisconsin men’s basketball team might be without another key back-up tonight when it hosts 13th-ranked Michigan State.
MADISON - The University of Wisconsin men’s basketball team might be without another key back-up tonight when it hosts 13th-ranked Michigan State.
The Badgers have already lost sophomore forward Frank Kaminsky, who got poked in the eye at Indiana last week. Now comes word that guard George Marshall could miss tonight’s contest due to illness. The redshirt freshman did not practice yesterday. Marshall averages about five points and one-and-a-half assists in 19 minutes a game, in relief of starting point guard Traevon Jackson. Jackson averages 26 minutes a night – and he might be called upon more this evening, along with seldom-used Zak Showalter. Jackson’s trying to shake off a poor shooting performance in Saturday night’s four-point Badger loss at Iowa, in which he only made 1-of-10 from the floor.
Wisconsin is 4-1 in the Big Ten, with a 13-5 overall record. They’ll face a surging Michigan State team that’s won five straight games, and has beaten the Badgers three consecutive times. The Spartans are coming off a three-point win over then 11th-ranked Ohio State Saturday. Keith Appling scored six points in the final 41 seconds. After the Badgers’ upset at Indiana, Wisconsin came to within two places of the Top-25 this week in both the AP and the coaches’ polls.

The Milwaukee Bucks will try to go four games above .500 tonight, when they host the Philadelphia 76’ers. The Bucks are coming off a 3-1 road trip, which ended with a six-point victory at Portland on Saturday night. Philadelphia continues to struggle at 17-and-24, after losing at home to San Antonio last night 90-85. Sixers’ point guard Jrue Holiday was held to 15 points, after he scored at least 29 in his previous three games. Meanwhile, Bucks’ coach Jim Boylan continues to get solid production from his bench. Sixth man Mike Dunleavy averaged almost 14 points a game during the road trip – and he played at least 30 minutes in three of those four contests. Boylan says Dunleavy has been “sensational” all season long. He has helped give Milwaukee the NBA’s ninth-highest-scoring bench with almost 34 points per game. They’re also fourth in rebounds with 17-and-a-half per night, and assists with almost eight-and-a-half.

In the D3 women’s poll, UW-Stevens Point held steady at No. 15. The Pointers have a 10-game winning streak, and they’re 15-3 overall. UW-Superior moved into the Top-25 for the first time ever, in the 25th spot. The Yellow Jackets are 15-3 overall. UW-Whitewater dropped out, after being 24th last week. The Warhawks still received votes, as did Oshkosh, Carthage, Saint Norbert, and Wisconsin Lutheran. De Pauw remains the women’s No. 1.
