State Basketball Roundup: Badgers struggle at the charity stripe in loss to Michigan State

MADISON - The University of Wisconsin men’s basketball team missed 11-of-18 free throws last night – and they lost to 13th-ranked Michigan State, 49-47 in Madison.

It was a defensive struggle throughout, as Spartans’ coach Tom Izzo chose not to speed up the Badgers’ deliberative pace. Floor shooting was again a problem for Wisconsin, as it made just 29-point-six percent to Michigan State’s 44. But it was still an extremely close game for the most of the night. Wisconsin led by one at the break – and both teams went four minutes without scoring late in the second half. Brandon Dawson made one of two free throws to put the Spartans up by four with two minutes to go. Ryan Evans hit a three-pointer to get Wisconsin to within one. Freshman Gary Harris then made one-of-two free throws to give Michigan State its two-point victory margin.

Keith Appling led the Spartans with 19, and Dawson had 18 points and 13 rebounds. Mike Bruesewitz scored 10 for Wisconsin, which lost its second straight home game to Michigan State. The Badgers are now 13-6 overall and 4-2 in the Big Ten. They dropped into a fourth place tie in the conference with Ohio State. Michigan State is now 17-3 overall, and 6-1 in the Big Ten. Former University of Wisconsin forward Jon Leuer has been traded to his third NBA team since last summer. The Cleveland Cavaliers sent Leuer to Memphis last night, in a deal designed to prevent the Grizzlies from having to pay the league’s luxury tax. Memphis sent forward Marreese Speights, guards Josh Selby and Wayne Ellington, and a future first-round draft pick to the Cavaliers – and the Grizzlies got only Leuer in return. It will free up six-million-dollars to keep Memphis under the luxury tax threshold. Also, Cleveland needed front-court help after center Anderson Varejao went out for the season with a blood clot. Leuer played for Milwaukee during all of his rookie campaign. The Bucks then traded Leuer to Houston, which released him. Cleveland picked him up off waivers, and he played in nine games for the Cavs as a back-up center, averaging two-and-a-half points and one-and-a-half rebounds in about 10 minutes per game.

A late rally fell short for the Marquette women, as they lost to 13th-ranked Louisville at home, 64-63. The Golden Eagles went on a furious 8-0 run, capped off by a three-pointer from Katie Young which gave Marquette a one-point lead. But Monique Reid made a fast-break lay-up with seven seconds left to give Louisville its one-point victory. The Cardinals won despite shooting just 37-percent from the floor, and making 9-of-18 from the free-throw line. Shoni Schimmel scored 19 for Louisville, which improved to 4-2 in the Big East Conference and 16-and-4 overall. Young had 17 points and 10 rebounds. Katherine Plouffe also had 17 points for Marquette, which fell to 2-3 in the conference and 10-8 overall. The Eagles will play at South Florida on Saturday.
