Brewers Roundup: Hart delays knee surgery to get a second opinion

Milwaukee Brewers’ first baseman Corey Hart delayed his scheduled knee surgery from yesterday, to get a second opinion on his injury. Hart’s agent wanted Colorado specialist Richard Steadman to look at the results of the M-R-I that was performed recently on Hart’s right knee. Steadman will be asked if he agrees with Brewers’ physician William Raasch that surgery should be performed. The operation would keep Hart from playing in about the first six weeks of the regular season. He recently complained about swelling in the right knee. The M-R-I uncovered a slight tear in the meniscus, as well as a defect in the knee. Assistant general manager Gord Ash says that if Steadman agrees with the diagnosis, it’s not known when the surgery would be performed. In the meantime, the Brewers plan to have Mat Gamel take over at first. Gamel has been recovering from his own knee injury which ended his season last May.

Veteran infielder Bobby Crosby has signed a minor league contract with the Brewers, and will try to make the team at Spring Training. The 33-year-old Crosby has been out of baseball since 2010. He was the American League’s rookie-of-the-year in 2004 with Oakland, and he’s a career .236 hitter with the A’s, Pittsburgh, and Arizona. The Brewers are looking for a veteran to back up shortstop Jean Segura, who made the jump from Double-“A” last August after being traded from Anaheim. Veteran utility infielder Donnie Murphy will also try to win that spot at camp. Fox Sports says that if Crosby makes the Milwaukee roster, he would get 800-thousand dollars plus another 450-thousand in incentives.
