Allina grants $4,500 to food pantries

Allina Health recently contributed a total of $4,500 to Pierce County food pantries.

Contributions of $500 each were made to food pantries in Bay City, Elmwood, Ellsworth, Plum City, Prescott, River Falls and Spring Valley. One thousand dollars was contributed to the Hunger Prevention Council of Pierce County, an umbrella organization helping coordinate activities of all of the food pantries in the county.

These contributions were recommended by a committee of employees at River Falls Area Hospital (RFAH), part of Allina Health.

“We know that food pantries throughout our region are having a tough time keeping up with demand,” said Heather Logelin, foundation and community engagement director at RFAH. “We also know that, for every dollar contributed, our local food pantries are able to secure five to six dollars of food.”

Logelin presented the checks to food pantry representatives at a monthly meeting of the Hunger Prevention Council, where she heard updates from each pantry.

“Several pantries reported record numbers of new clients in December,” said Logelin. “While we are blessed to have many generous people in this region, the reality is that the food that is most nutritious also costs the most. We hope that this contribution will help the pantries meet the basic nutritional needs of local families.”
