”Leading with Character the Panther Way” means going beyond book learning.

The slogan was developed for the Ellsworth School District’s new Character Education Program, discussed by Assistant Principal Tim Brunner and Special Education teacher Tim Conway of the middle school with local chamber of commerce members Thursday.

It’s accompanied by nine traits to be promoted, including: respect, responsibility, citizenship, compassion, perseverance, courage, cooperation, honesty and positive attitude.

During the school district’s recent strategic planning process, needs were considered and character education was deemed to be part of the schools’ mission, Brunner said. Although many programs in the district have already been devoted to the topic, this marks the first time it’s become a district-wide initiative.
