Saturday State Sports Briefs: Badgers still on unbeaten streak in WCHA

MADISON - Michael Mersch had two goals and an assist for the University of Wisconsin men’s hockey team as it thumped Alaska-Anchorage 5-2.
That was the 10th loss in the last 11 games for the Seawolves. As cold as Alaska is, Wisconsin is just as hot. The Badgers have lost just once in their last dozen games. Tyler Barnes, Mark Zengerle and Nic Kerdiles each had a goal and an assist for the Badgers. Wisconsin’s record improves to 10-8-5, including 7-5-5 in the WCHA. The Badgers outshot the Seawolves 37-14.

The University of Wisconsin wrestling team down Indiana Friday 26-9 at the UW Fieldhouse in Madison. The No. 19 ranked Badgers won seven of 10 matches, including a forfeit at 197 pounds. Winning for UW were Tyler Graff by tech. fall at 133; Tom Kelliher at 141; Cole Schmitt at 149; Frank Cousins at 165; Seth Leigel at 174 and Connor Medbery at heavyweight. Wisconsin improves to 7-4 overall and 4-2 in the Big Ten. The Badgers wrestle Purdue Monday at Hinsdale Central High School in Hinsdale, Ill. just outside of Chicago.

Cold shooting and a lot of turnovers doomed the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee in its conference showdown with cross-state rival Green Bay. The Phoenix routed Milwaukee 74-54 Friday. Alec Brown scored 23 points and had eight rebounds for the winners. Keifer Sykes chipped in with 16 points and five assists as the Phoenix improved their record to 11-10, 5-3 in the Horizon League. Green Bay blew open a close game in the second half by scoring 13 points in a row. Jordan Aaron had 20 points for the Panthers who lost for the 16th time in 21 games overall. They’ve dropped six of seven in the conference.

Green Bay Packers running back Cedric Benson is being accused of letting his dogs runs loose. Benson was cited after an incident last month in Maribel where a neighbor claims Benson’s Rottweilers attacked his cattle. Benson was reportedly cited a second time after the dogs escaped again.
